| 268457 | 2004-09-02 21:43:00 | I have a Pentium 4, 2.0ghz running XP home. I have yet to get my head around backups - before loading XP2 from your CD (many thanks) I was trying to do the recommended backup of my files. Using XP backup after 15 minutes and 7 floppies I noted I still had well over an hour and realised it was not going to be a happening thing. I would like to back up to a CD but Understand Windows XP home cant do this. My CD software is Nero 6. Can anyone suggest software or a way a mug like me could better handle backups without it costing an arm and a leg? Thanks | Mervyn (824) | ||

Use the Wizard and select Let me choose what to back up, and select System State. Since you have a CD burner I would then burn your backed up System State file and all your data files (including bookmarks, address books, etc) to CD. Oxie (Lyn) |

You cant back things up forever, without reinstalling XP once in a while . I wouldnt bother with backups of programs (that have already been installed), besides what XP installs (altho most of what you need for XP is on the CD anyway, besides the updates) . Just install them from the original CD's . Or burn what u download onto CD . Personally, I've never backed up anything but downloads for updates of programs I use, I copy them to a spare partition of the hdd, or to a CD . To save me getting / downlolading them again, since some of them are so big (and I'm only on 56k) . BOTH Home and Pro have the cd writing feature . I just dont use it . And for some people, it can be complicated . I prefer CD Creator / DirectCD . It's easier to use . And Nero (but hardly use Nero for data stuff, mostly DVD, or MP3's) |

The more the system is used, turned on, shut down, things installed and uninstalled and general wear and tear the system may become damaged Just like a car the more miles it does the more damage it may incur. This is in a physical sense of computers life comming to an end and also Data which can become misplaced be it through bugs, limitations of sofware or user miconfiguration. Personally i think software errors are more common for beginners than hardware errors, but thats not an exact figure. |

| 268466 | 2004-09-03 11:04:00 | Thank you captive and drcspy - you have both appreciated my ignorance of trying to back up my personal files to floppy ! I have no wish to back up my entire computer - just my personal files. I still don't know how to do this to a CD using XP home?? You guys are just to clever for mugs like me to understand. Can anyone descend to my level with a simple answer? | Mervyn (824) | ||
