2004-09-05 07:07:00 | Gidday, I cleared my main drive a while ago and had around 500MB of space. that hard drive space is now only half that - 250MB (even if I completely empty the temp folder will only have 350MB). I haven't installed any new programs/games so can't understand where that hard drive space might of gone. Any ideas would be appreciated. cheers running win98SE

2004-09-05 07:22:00 | could be windows swap file resizing. | tweak'e (174) | |
2004-09-05 10:14:00 | As mentioned it could be the swap file. Internet Explorer will quite often allocate itself "gigs" (literally) of space for "Temporary Internet Files" which may be something to check out. Just for clarification that is not a memory leak. A memory leak is when a program (poorly designed or otherwise) uses up all the available RAM - nothing to do with hard drive space.

2004-09-05 10:50:00 | Is there any chance that the index.dat file might hog a lot of that space? How long ago did you "clear your hard drive"? It might be worthwhile having a look at the index.dat FAQ (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) and clearing it out.

2004-09-06 07:44:00 | Gidday, thanks for the replies. I have a IE5.dat (6MB) and a IE6.dat (8MB) so it doesn't seem to be the problem. If it is my windows swap file - what do I need to check and what can I do about it?? cheers Nath

2004-09-06 09:12:00 | First. Go to Tools --> Internet Options --> Settings --> and see what size your IE temp folder is. Checking the size of the swap file in W98 is something along the lines of Control Panel -> System and there should be something in there regarding "Virtual Memory"
