269079 2004-09-04 01:34:00 If i already have 4 ide devices, will there be any hardware conflicts if i install a pci ide expansion card, problems such as the fact the primary master/slave and secondary master/slave are already all taken etc?
My motherboard has no SATA :(

269080 2004-09-04 01:38:00 provided you have a free pci slot (and don't get any werid irq shareing problems) then you can add an ide/raid card. tweak'e (174)

What are the specs on your combo, you may not get "conflict" direct But it may be difficult to tune, as this:

Ga-81exp
P4- (Northwood) 2g
1g ddr400
DVD (pioneer)
Cdrw- (Ricoh)
Zip 250
60 G (7200 Seagate)
Raid (2x200 Seagate)
3dlabs (Oxygene)
Creative (Audigy)
Winfast Xp (TV-V-capture)
56k- D-v-f
USB broad band/Mouse (Track-ball)/scanner
Plus The fire wire, smart card, memory stick reader and all the other board bridges Ect.
Network printer,
I/net gateway for network.

It runs, it took a very long time to tune at the end of its main warranty it still wasn’t right.

I opened it up at the end of its warranty and found the DVD on master cable position (ide 1) on 80-wire cable and the H/D on slave (set to C/S). Now H/D set to m on M Cable position.

It doesn’t “officially” conflict, it is difficult to tune, like a Ferrari it needs a mechanic in the boot.

I wouldn’t build like this again, (The entertainment centre P/C is not yet here) (now you can get CD-RW/DVD-RW drives This could resolve some issues, sick of putting money in this)
Simpler to use 1 old P/C for the raid Ect and run a mini fire wire or giga/net possibly with a kvm.

If you want raid for fast disk access then put some of the other devices in another unit.

269082 2004-09-04 03:12:00 drb 1 can you explain what you mean buy "difficult to tune" :)

it sounds like your pc had some of the usuall issues which should have been sorted out under warranty.

most ide/raid cards will lenghten the boot time as the ide/raid card does its checks.

Not boot time, that has to be expected . As with the Drive positions (Should have been) .

Warranty to me means you don’t" f "with it . Possibly because most of the products I deal/dealt with are multi $100-000 ones the rules are tighter . I apply those to myself .

Every time it went back there was some "reason" for a "charge" they lost a customer . N . Z . I . Paid $7000-00 for it at the time .

There were / still are . Crash issues relating to some type off DVD, ZIP, CD-RW, TV Card conflict . If you split them up into different H/ware profiles in XP/2K (Multi boots) the problems go away (Windows states no conlicts) .

If all devices are active in one profile the TV card will crash for no apparent reason, when nothing else is being used . The DVD will crash part way through a movie in the same way, Nero will freeze when its the only application being used .

Zip will suddenly become unavailable . Observed Activity on Zip and DVD indicator LEDS' as crashes occurred in TV card usage . Same in Nero . Same in DVD But CD and ZIP LEDS’ .

(Poor Explanation)

Its like something is doing something simular to a packet check on a network (Correct Tech term unknown) . Except it checks all the drives and in the process crashes what is running . That is probably not what happens but its how it visually appears . Something causes the LEDS’ to trip on the drives and "she gone" .

When it goes main power shut down is the only way to unlock it (V/V Bad, not like)

In this Particular bios you can not (or I can not find a way to turn off caching/shadowing) some times after shut down from crash it will take two or three restarts to get all the drives displaying in the bios properly .

? If i split the drives and the TV card in profiles it is use-able, but not as a true multi function/tasking unit .

This board became the IDE/SATA board; it did not run for long . I brought Ga because my Ga5 was almost bullet proof . If I had Personally shelled out 7g for this I would be V/V/ unhappy . It’s better than nothing . I shall learn from it and move on, its getting dated . From the Microsoft/Intel point of view It’s just about ready for the bin .

You are very right it should have been fixed under warranty and it should perform, $ and time to make it so?

If Bag goes ahead, and it goes well, good, If it miss behaves it could turn into a time and dollar sponge . It should work, But .

269085 2004-09-04 04:40:00 What did you plan to put on the add in card? Some don't play nicely with optical drives. PaulD (232)
269086 2004-09-04 05:50:00 Reading the specs,

How did/do you intend to configre/reconfigure IDE 1/2?

What is master/slave Where at the moment?

Did/do you intend to boot from RAID?

IS it to be Raid 0 or 1, or other?
drb1 (4492)
269087 2004-09-04 08:36:00 the 2 hdds are primary master/slave, the DVD secondary master, CD writer slave. I was only thinking of having just another hdd on the ide expansion card, no RAID dirtbag (6060)
269088 2004-09-04 09:17:00 > thinking of having just another hdd on the ide

my mistake.

You have the expansion card, the correct drivers for your o/s and the third h/d?.

or are you going to buy them?

what is the o/s, are the o/ss in question.
