269922 2004-09-06 23:09:00 dear friends,

after installing SP2 you are directed to a site where there are several offers for antivirus software and firewalls.
i choose just to try the 12 month free subscription to eTrust antivirus and firewall which is offered there.
It looks and feels nice, is made by computer Associates, but I relaise that this piece of software did not have such a good name in the past.
As for their firewall, it looks and feels like ZoneAlarm to me.
on another computer I work with AVg and am happy with that.
Anyone got experience with this '12 month freebie' ?

cheers

Johan

269923 2004-09-06 23:46:00 Hey

recently I updated to Sp2 and it didn't do that for me???

It already has a firewall build in once you install that seems to work fine, so I don't know why they are offering you a new one...

As for the Antivirus, I just use Norton 2004 Pro, so i never signed up for anything, but NOTHING is free, or as free as it is made out to be anyways.

Sounds a bit risky to me.

What is the name of the Anti virus softwate/programme they offered you???

269924 2004-09-07 00:37:00 One of the reasons that I reinstalled my whole system was just that: Norton. i think it is a resource sucker. AVG is a good freebie.
The offered 12 month subscription is to CA's eTrust anitivirus.

Cheers

Johan

269925 2004-09-07 03:32:00 You sure it wasnt SP1?? The CD that comes with SP1 / the updates CD, if you ordered the SP1 CD online or on the phone from Microsoft??

That also comes with a 12 mth trial of this firewall/ AV.

269926 2004-09-07 06:12:00 No, it was the CD that came this month with our great PCWORLD !
if you run through the install procedure, at the end it refers you to a part of microsoft.com where you get freebies antivirus, like 3 months Panda, (i do not think NOD32 was there) and others. The only 12 month one was eTrust, which has basically the good Zonealarm Firewall, if you ask me, and the VET-based Antivirus.
