269855 2004-09-06 12:39:00 I've been using Firefox for a while now and I'm finding it very good. And if it is not the sort of target for "nasties that Explorer is, then so much gthe better.

There is one thing though tho that new Firefox users shoud keep in mind. I had read on PF1 that it sometimes fails to display stuff on Web pages and recently I've noticed several such events. One of my online bank accounts makes a mess of printing out a copy of a transaction. The login form at our Public Library does strange things as I type in a password. And a few web pages display heaps more info on Explorer than they do on Firefox. My Explorer had no problems with the above errors.

So I'd like to repeat the warning given here recently. Get Firefox...it's really good...but keep Explorer as well to double check anything that is inportant for yiou.

Firefox is a work in progress and will no doubt catch these errors as it grows. Isn't there a new version out quite soon? Cheers Ken

269856 2004-09-06 12:41:00 the errors are the pages themselves. metla (154)
269857 2004-09-06 12:50:00 Send a polite email to the websites in question, administrator or webmaster, explaining the problems and how they are related to the way the website is coded (That is, it does not comply to internet (W3C) standards as IE's proprietary coding does not). You may get a pleasant surprise, then again you may not but, if users do not point out the errors in the websites then nothing is likely to change.

If you would like to post the url's of the misguided websites here, some support for your corrective efforts will be forthcoming :)

269858 2004-09-06 13:18:00 Standards, standards and then you have dumb websites that don't keep to them. mikebartnz (21)
269859 2004-09-06 13:48:00 Okay Murray, I'll take up your offer - albeit rather guiltily because it may be me at fault.
And I haven't investigated everything yet.

Recently I emailed the webmaster for the PSIS banking site, which was fine when I used IE, but is messy (line & colour overlays on homepage & others) since I switched to Firefox. Transactions work fine, but it's hard to read.
I got a prompt and lengthy reply, which I was very pleased with.

He was surprised I had Firefox problems (said he used it himself) & suggested I may have my text size enlarged too high.
As I like big print, I assumed he was right. But I've decreased it & there's no change.
Probably I've stuffed up somewhere else ( and he couldn't have been more helpful) but if anyone else will test it for me, that would be a real help - before I reply to him with either another question or my thanks for his answer.

269860 2004-09-06 13:50:00 Yeah, it's slightly ironic that a bunch of us are arguing against [mandatory] standards in another thread but when it comes to something that is delivered by various means to and by such a variety of different platforms using different hardware, OS's and software to access it, standards become the mainstay of maintaining a functional transfer of information.

It's the one of the worst aspects of domination by a relatively trivial piece of software, in the scheme of things, but, deliberately orchestrated to be non-complying (embrace, absorb, excrete, flush). The tail wagging the dog so hard the poor mutt's teeth are rattling.

BTW, I saw somwhere that Mozilla now has a 15% share of the browser share from way less than 5% 4 or 5 months ago. So let the 15% be heard, get emailing.

269861 2004-09-06 13:59:00 Hi Laura. It checked out fine using Mozilla 1.7.1 in Linux, I'll check it out with Firefox in Windows tomorrow (if I forget, bump the thread with a reminder)

They seem to be reasonably on to it with their troubleshooting section in their FAQ's (www.psis.co.nz) but no mention of Firefix or Mozilla.

The messy page problem is unlikely IMO, to be your fault. How are sight impaired people supposed to get on? It it a matter of providing the correct coding for viewing text with alt tags for different settings.
