2004-09-06 07:13:00 | How can I boot into DOS from Win XP and Win 2000? | Scattershot06 (4844) | |
2004-09-06 07:25:00 | XP doesnt really have standalone DOS. Only DOS once XP boots. You'll need a floppy as a system disk. What do you want to do in DOS?? You might be able to boot into DOS with 2k. Press F8 after it boots up. See what the options are.

2004-09-06 09:39:00 | Both XP and W2000 have a command prompt cmd.exe which allows you to enter commands, run batch programs etc. In XP it is in c:\windows\system32, in Win200 it is in c:\WINNT\system32. You can make a short cut to the file to go on your desk top. Then in addition to the command line prompt there is also a command.com program in each OS which is a 16 bit application intended to run 16 bit MS-DOS programs. Whereas cmd.exe is 32 bit. A shortcut to comand.com will give the familiar MS-DOS shortcut icon. Command.com is in the same folder as cmd.exe, as above.

2004-09-06 10:54:00 | Some programs run Ok through the command prompt in XP. But some don't and you may have to boot off a DOS disk, use some kind of DOS emulator (DOSBOX etc.) or some kind of virtual PC (for which Microsoft charges). I tried getting a dual boot, DOS and XP, through Boot.ini, but no go. I did organise a dual boot with XP and Win98 a month or so back. My recalcitrant DOS program did run using Win98 (command prompt?), whereas it flatly refused to run with the XP boot.

2004-09-07 03:38:00 | Of course, you might have interesting problems with modern enormous hard disks. I'd be very cautious about writing to a very big XP hard disk. NTFS would be no problem ... DOS won't see it. ;-) | Graham L (2) | |
