269565 2004-09-05 11:49:00 Hi,
Have been looking for a program for unzipping files.
Googled for WinZip and apparently they are having problems with hacking
see Here (www.internetweek.com)

OK they have done something about it, but am putting it on to someone else's computer which at the moment has no protection at all, and I will be installing Ad-Aware, Spybot and AVG on it. But installing AVG has hit a problem. May be of my own making but can't figure it out.

AVG has a new way of downloading their program, first you register, then they send you an email, then you click on a link in that email to start downloading it, and in the meantime they send you another email with the serial no. which you enter on installation. Only problem is, although it says it is an application, when I clicked on it option to "open" it didn't do anything.
Can only assume that it is a zip file. But they haven't got a program that unzips files. They have Windows XP Pro. My Windows XP pro is able to unzip files and can't work out why theirs can't, so need to find one to use.

Has anyone tried CAM Unzip, which has a Windows XP interface when running Windows XP? It sounds quite good and is free (my favourite word!).
See Here (http://www.camunzip.com/)

Sounds as if you only have to doubleclick file to be unzipped, then click on the .exe file. My friends don't want anything awkward to use.

Any info you think might help will be appreciated. Not to keen on getting emails from them till their security has been improved or should I say, actually exists!

regards, Marg.

269567 2004-09-05 11:55:00 WINRAR is the best and easiest by far. :D barmypom (6048)
269568 2004-09-05 11:57:00 Try once more.
I take it they downloaded the file onto their computer before it was opened.
btw AVG isn't a zip

This is actually free (rather than shareware like WinZip/Rar).

269570 2004-09-05 12:28:00 Hi Rob99 and WTF

When I installed my version of AVG it was a simple step to download and install AVG. Well, tonight I found that things have changed.

AVG free now comes with WinRAR SelfExtractor. They say to install AVG properly, please follow these steps:

1. create a new folder and extract the installation file from the AVG package using your WinRAR (or any other unpacking software) into the new folder.

2. Start the SETUP.EXE application from this folder.

Or you can rename the downloaded *.exe file to *.rar file. Now you can double-click on the renamed file. If you have properly installed unpacking program, it will open it and you can copy content of the file to empty folder.

My friends don't want something that will be a nightmare to use. Regards updating, I will let them know by email as soon as I either see notification by the helpful posters on this forum or through my own checking. If things are kept easy to use, they are more likely to be used. These people are not thick, they simply don't need the extra hassle.

Thanks for all the help so far, and that includes other posts in this thread as well. It's been really good.

Regards, Marg

269571 2004-09-05 12:33:00 Xp home and pro usually have zip support already maybe its been turned off.??
Have a look in folder options/file types and scrool down to zip and checked opens with It should be Compressed (zipped) Folder you never know it could have been changed somehow. Also here is a page showing how to turn the zip function on and off.

269572 2004-09-05 12:33:00 I'm with WTF on this tell them to ZipGenius, as it integrates with XP perfectly, and you can just right click on the file and tell it to unzip it into a new folder which it will create. Rob99 (151)
269573 2004-09-05 13:29:00 Hi Johnboy,
will check out your suggestion tomorrow pm. Thanks for the reply.

Rob99 and WTF.
Zipgenius looks good. Going for the standard, both for my friends and myself - even though my WindowsXP can do it anyway.

Am noticing that Mozilla programs are starting to sneak very subtly into my beloved Windows environment. :O

Thanks for the help, Marg.
