270428 2004-09-08 12:30:00 My computer is a PentPro 200S, motherboard Asus P/1-P6NP5 Rev 1.4. It is the end of the line of a family of true 32 bit CPU's specially designed for NT.

Can't find anything on the internet about the motherboard, besides info like the best CPU has 1Meg L2 cache, part no: G.J. 8052IEX2001M, which I will try to get.

What I really want to know is if this setup will take 4 EDO 64 Meg Ram. It has 4x 32 Meg at the moment. I can get some but don't want to buy it without being reasonably sure that it will work. the 64 Meg EDO Ram is like hens teeth and I would really like to put it into this computer.

Does anyone know the answers?

270429 2004-09-08 20:02:00 If you can find some 64Mb EDO cheap or free then try it. It won't be common, I don't think (it was common in compaq servers a while back but haven't seen EDO for ages). But I don't think I would bother. Getting it up to 256Mb doesn't seem like it is worthwhile. Nothing has 256Mb these days.

270430 2004-09-09 11:26:00 If I do get those 64Meg ram assemblies they will cost me $50 each and I intend to get 4 of them that is why I originally posted asking if anyone knew whether or not they will work on the motherboard I have.

Many older computers work ok with small amounts of ram. At the moment I have just started a course which uses iMacs, the original ones (OS9), and they have 64meg ram, 8 Gig hard drives.

The original computer I had used 8 Meg of ram running Windows 98SE and it worked ok but obviously benefited from having more. The PentPro had 16Meg!

Money is a factor so I am going to have to stick with the computer I have now until I get about $3000 then I will get something really good!

See here for a person that loves PentPros:

270431 2004-09-09 12:07:00 Acording to the manual on the asus website this board would take 64 meg sticks either fastpage or edo up to 256 megs total, but thats alot of money to spend on an obsolete rig for what would be a marginal improvement in performance. IMO it would be a hell of a lot wiser (especially if money is tight) to pick up a secondhand AT board with a 400 - 500 amd cpu. They are reasonbly easy to get for around 30-40 bucks often with some ram onboard. the highlander (245)
270432 2004-09-09 13:00:00 Yes I finally found the manual, up until tonight I have never been able to locate it. Thanks for your effort.

I know that I am making an unwise decision from the money point of view but this computer is reliable and runs Win2K Pro dual booted with Win98SE, without a hiccup on Win2K and I am very happy with it. I don't want to go through all the hassle of a full installation on an unknown motherboard or where my hard drive will have to learn the new mother board if I don't do a full instal, for only a small improvement. Later I will buy a really good computer.

I have many programs on this computer and I have spent ages getting it to the point it is now. It is really fine for dial up internet browsing and I can run Adobe PhotoShop6+Freehand9+Irfanview+Mpad and ancilliary programs at the same time no problems and do quite sophisticated graphics manipulation with no appreciable annoying slow downs.

If I do any fancy rendering of Fractals it gets quite slow and I can't wait to get a faster machine in the GigaHertz range.
