1370268 2014-03-15 19:54:00 My HDD that did contain WIN8.1 is failing. Both BIOS and Windows tell me so.

I have applied my external backup of Win8.1 to a new drive but I still get the message.

When I disconnect the suspect HDD I cannot get the PC to work.

I have my original 2TB HDD which has stored in it my rubbish files (movies etc.) I was silly enough to create another partition (because of the disk size) and put Win7 on it as my C:. I later added Win8 to another HDD.

Right, now as said, when I disconnect the faulty drive the startup fails as it cannot find the disk I have removed.

Do I use device management to disable/remove the HDD and will the system then boot into Win8.1? I have already used EasyBCD to make Win8.1 the boot disk and this works so long as the suspect disk is still attached.

1370269 2014-03-15 20:50:00 WHAT hdd is the bootdisk in the BIOS?? Change it to the new hdd, if the BIOS can see it. Then see if that message disappears Speedy Gonzales (78)
1370270 2014-03-15 21:24:00 I have applied my external backup of Win8.1 to a new drive The problem with booting often happens when the software you created the backup with hasn't done it fully. It has to backup the hidden partition and put it back as well. LOTS of backup software doesn't do it fully / correctly with 8 / 8.1

Boot from your Windows DVD, after you enter the location windows, the next window, bottom left, Repair your computer - select TroubleShoot/Advanced/Automatic Repair -- work through. If that doesn't work then you may have to rebuild the boot option manually by command prompt. windows-8-boot-fix/ (www.techspot.com)

1370272 2014-03-15 22:00:00 Goog you got it going :) seems the BIOS got screwed up, if you only have the one HDD attached it should have auto detected the 1 drive instead of looking for the second. wainuitech (129)
1370273 2014-03-16 01:12:00 Weird things can happen with dual booting, windows doesn't always put the boot files where you'd expect and not even necessarily on the same hdd as the OS.
Also when you clone drives I've often encountered what you seem to have where the PC will start to boot off one drive initially then switch to the other - difficult to tell because they have the same files and same ID if cloned properly.
It's always a good Idea to remove the original disk once the new one is ready so you know for sure what you are booting from and there are no conflicts.
