1369706 2014-03-07 07:55:00 I know I've asked this before, but I just wanted to be absolutely sure....

A while back I posted a thread about buying RAM for my Dell Inspiron 15R SE Laptop (details here: pressf1.pcworld.co.nz

I just want to be sure that this RAM (www.mightyape.co.nz) will be compatible before I buy it. Also, is there any difference between brands or is RAM all the same?

Thanks in advance!

1369707 2014-03-07 08:10:00 Name Brand PC's can be a PITA, sometimes you can buy any make of RAM and it will work other times it wont.

BUT to answer your question 100% IT WONT. The one you linked at Mightyape is DESKTOP RAM, the link provided in the earlier post is relating to a Laptop, totally different RAM.

Look in your original post, 1st link its SO-DIMM RAM.

1369708 2014-03-07 08:22:00 Oh shoot I forgot about the whole desktop/laptop thing.... So would something like this work then? www.mightyape.co.nz

Does the speed thing (the 1600MHz) matter? Or can I use a higher speed RAM or would it not be compatible?

Thanks for your help!

1369709 2014-03-07 10:35:00 In general you can use RAM rated for a higher speed and\or faster timings than the original RAM and everything will simply run at the lowest common speed that all the memory modules support. Usually...

If you really want to be sure, check the original RAM speed and timings and get something that actually matches those specifications... OR completely replace the old RAM with the new one(s), and sell the old RAM on Trademe or whatever.

1369710 2014-03-07 18:24:00 Just remember Dell are notorious for not accepting any old RAM even if it should be correct. I tried some in a Dell desktop a while ago, it was the right type, size speed and everything but it was non Dell supplied (I already had it lying around) wouldn't work gary67 (56)

I remember a year or so back, went to upgrade a Dell Computers Ram, ended up trying at least 5 different brands before one finally worked. Sometimes it works fine other times it wont. wainuitech (129)
1369712 2014-03-08 00:36:00 Cools thanks everyone for your help. From all that I'm guessing that I'd be better off buying Dell's own RAM to avoid any compatibility issues. I found it here: www.upgradeable.co.nz - has anyone used this site before? Is it reliable? Also, including shipping that totals $86, so am I getting ripped off?

Cheers

1369713 2014-03-08 02:11:00 That price is comparable to other Places. www.ascent.co.nz

The good thing about a shop like that is if you get it, and for some reason it doesn't work you should get a refund as its advertised as dell compatible.
