www.smallgovtimes.com

Russia, for example, enforces very strict gun control on its people, but
its murder rate remains quite high. In fact, the murder rate in Russia is
four times higher than in the “gun-ridden” United States, cites the
study.
”Homicide results suggest that where guns are scarce other weapons are substituted in killings.” In other words, the elimination of guns does not eliminate murder, and in the case of gun-controlled Russia, murder rates
are quite high.
The study revealed several European countries with significant gun ownership, like Norway, Finland, Germany and France – had remarkably low murder rates. Contrast that with Luxembourg, “where handguns are
totally banned and ownership of any kind of gun is minimal, had a murder rate nine times higher than Germany in 2002.”
The study found no evidence to suggest that the availability of guns contributes to higher murder rates anywhere in the world. ”Of course, it may be speculated that murder rates around the world would be higher if guns
were more available. But there is simply no evidence to support this.”
Further, the report cited, “the determinants of murder and suicide are basic social, economic, and cultural factors, not the prevalence of some form of deadly mechanism.” Meaning, it’s not guns that kill people.

1352217 2013-08-28 00:55:00 Obviously people kill people, but you can't compare totally different countires & cultures and tell if gun availability and murder rates are related based on that.
Take the US and remove all handguns and see if it has an impact and then you'll get an Idea, anything else is largely guesswork.

Murder is hardly the only issue surrounding guns, what about armed robbery, accidental shootings, and people who go nuts and shoot large groups of school mates or random people - it'd be a lot harder to go on a killing spree with a bladed weapon than a rifle for example - at least the victims have a chance to fight back or run away.

I don't advocate banning guns anyway, I just don't think it's sensible to make owning them a right or that anyone actually "needs" a handgun. I think it's too late for america to ban them as well, it's not like everyone will just hand in their guns if the law changes. Saying there is no correlation between gun ownership and murder doesn't answer the question of whether people should be allowed to own guns, it's a single factor at most in a much wider argument.

That's a sensible observation.

1352219 2013-08-28 02:24:00 As shooter myself, I am aware there is a faction in NZ that would like to ban guns and anything else they may take a dislike to.

And I think the article does point out a few facts of interest to the likes of Prefect and I.

Is Prefect still about?

Greg of course should put spear where the rest of put gun.

1352220 2013-08-28 02:36:00 Sure, guns kill people. Lots of things kill people. Mostly, people kill people. Do I think guns should be blanket banned. No. But I think they need some form of control. I don't have an issue with the way it's handled in NZ. inphinity (7274)

I am quite certain that that is the case, is it not?

No, only for certain catorgorys of guns, military style and hand guns. It's been a while since I last looked, so someone will put be right, let my license lapse 3 years ago, and yes the armoury is empty...

Let guns roam free.
