In any case, the legislastion does not limit the expanded powers of the GCSB to "the net", it also widens the scope for ANY type of surveilance activity they wish to employ.

The associated TICS bill requires a provider of any "telecommunications service" to provide the GCSB & SIS with "full interception capability".

Sounds a lot like the type of society that was decried as "oppressive" when it was the soviet bloc doing it.
But then, we're the good guys so it's ok for us...

I suppose, "if you're doing nothing wrong, you've got nothing to fear" seems fairly reasonable to some, after all John's a nice smiley guy, the current government is mostly benevolent.
What about the next govt? or the one after that? or in 20 years?

I imagine it might be tempting to have a wee peek at some dirt on a political opponent that just happens to have been collected, as the person may communicate with those who oppose the govt (and by extension the "national interest"?).


And I don't care about the scammer german either.You are not alone there, however, his antics have certainly brought to public attention things that the govt would rather have remained under the radar.

At the end of the day, I suppose you're either with us or against us ... ;)

1351061 2013-08-12 20:22:00 Governments in general, and this government in particular, are not always averse to ignoring the rights of citizens they consider or suspect in regard to non-disclosed "threats" to non-disclosed state interests. (Any niggling hindrance by the law of the land can simply be bypassed by changing the law.)
Those who would abandon a few rights to gain a little security are doomed to lose a lot of both. We have, and it is getting a whole lot worse.

Its not just privacy on the internet, also your phone calls, your bank records & spending habits. Where youve been & what youve been doing.

Dont care about privacy, what if some listening devices were put into your house & car. Care about that ?? Do you cars if you kids & spouse & also spied on
What when neighbors, relatives & friends are encouraged to spy on each other (ie East Germany)

What when all this info in govt hands gets mis-used, illegally sold (yes its happened) , or used get 'get at' someone by a govt employee with a vendetta . This has all happened in govt depts in NZ
