1352226 2013-08-29 03:33:00 The person who wants the firearm gets registered. When our house was going to be repaired after the quakes, went to the New Brighton police and asked for a transfer form to transfer rifle over to son, not needed if son has a licence.

Police kindly offered to house the rifle for 6 weeks, which we found admirable of them.

Didn't a gun kill a couple of nice folk up north a couple of days ago ! appears a jealous cast-off did the killing.

Lurking.

1352227 2013-08-29 03:57:00 The firearm laws need changing so that a primary use for a gun is self defence. That way burglars etc can be actively discouraged by shooting them dead like they are allowed to do in the USA. Sure there are going to be issues like shooting an intruder and finding out the boy you shot has sneaked in the house to root your daughter. Perhaps people who are sneaking around will need to sharpen up a bit. I agree with banning handguns and sawn off shotties. But imo gun ownership should be right not a privilege for people that aren't a few sandwiches short of a picnic or people with criminal convictions perhaps limit females with guns because of their lack of emotional stability. prefect (6291)
1352228 2013-08-29 04:06:00 I'm a committee member of both the local branches of the NZ Deerstalkers Assn and NZ Clay Target Assn. When the new regulations which come into force on December 11, it will mean that you have get an endorsement on your license ... just like a drivers license, if it's only for private motor vehicle, you are not allowed to drive a taxi, bus, bulldozer etc.

Personally, I'm not too worried about it, more detailed background check and more secure storage if required.

You STILL have the problem of scumbags getting a hold of weapons by unlawful means.

Do guns kill people ??? Too bloody right they do if they're in the wrong hands ... commonly referred to as "the nut behind the butt"

An example recently was the two Black Power guys shooting a Mongrel Mob member up north. You can bring in as many laws and regulations as you like ... it's not going to stop the WRONG people getting their hands on them.

Then you also have the people that can't identify a target.

They are indeed a worry.

Harsh. What about the bloke who shot and murdered his ex-girlfriend, her current partner and himself this week? You saying he wasn't emotionally instable? Plenty of other blokes have also committed the same crime - they weren't emotionally instable either?

I hope you are nice to your wife around firearm licence renewal time.

BULLETS KILL PEOPLE

and even then we only have correlation and are hard pressed to prove causation.

MAKE WAR TO MAKE PEACE; how does this ideology continue stand the test of time for as long as it has?

BULLETS KILL PEOPLE

Get a box of bullets, put it in a room full of people, watch in amazement as it proceeds not to kill anyone, try the same experiment with a gun (ok don't you may get arrested). I propose that of guns, bullets, and people, the only one that can kill anyone by itself is people. A gun is a tool, a bullet a necessary component of that tool, the person is the operator responsible for how it gets used without which it doesn't function. Case closed :p

Banning guns is pointless, having them available as a right is stupid. Have guns (but not handguns for the public) but control who gets to have them as best you can (no system is perfect). Also anyone caught doing something stupid with a gun should be immediately banned from having one for a good amount of time, and permanently for a 2nd offence or something really bad. Waving at your mates to scare them at a party, Banned. Walking down the main street carrying one, Banned. Shooting at rabbits on the road from the back of a moving vehicle (ok I've done this one, I too can be stupid), Banned. You get the picture.

Why no handguns? you don't need them for personal defence of your house and you can conceal them and carry them around far too easily. I don't think anyone should be wandering around wild west style carrying a pistol. Also as guns go handguns are the one specifically designed for shooting other people at close range and as such I don't think they should exist.

This started out in fun with the bullet thing and got a bit preachy, sorry.
