1370021 2014-03-12 09:05:00 I have recently transferred my previous motherboard and bits into the older PC's case and fried a USB stick when using the front port. :o :o

I *think* I have now got the wires around the right way but is there any way to test it without blowing up another stick? :xmouth:

1370022 2014-03-12 09:52:00 Aside from triple-checking the wiring after a good sleep and maybe testing with a sacrificial peripheral...

You could make one of these: www.instructables.com (or buy one, something like that is probably all over eBay or such) - I think I'll make one for myself, actually!

Or test it with a multimeter - although I would recommend against putting the probes into the socket, you run a high risk of shorting the pins to the outer shell which is of course connected to ground, and blowing something on the motherboard. It's doable with a steady hand, good light, and a multimeter with alligator clips holding a thin sewing needle or similar, though. (Find the USB socket pinout online)

Or get a USB cable and chop the end off, measure the bare wires with a multimeter, hoping of course that the colour code is standard...

That looks pretty neat . Does this thing ( . trademe . co . nz/computers/peripherals/other/auction-704303539 . htm" target="_blank">www . trademe . co . nz) do the same sort of job?

Thanks Greg, that is a very kind offer . A friend is giving me an old stick to try next and if that doesn't work then I will be resorting to duct tape . :p

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to. It looks like that one just measures the voltage the port is supplying and the current drawn by any device you plug into it. Useful but not in your situation.
