1369546 2014-03-06 02:19:00 I have a Panasonic 55" smart TV - at present it is running via wifi but I am about to upgrade to VDSL and wonder if I would be better to have the modem connect to my Desktop or the TV - and does it make any difference please?

Is there any virus worries with a TV using the Net?

1369547 2014-03-06 02:40:00 Not really sure what you mean by "have the modem connect to my Desktop or the TV" - do you mean by a cable? I assume you want to have internet on both the TV and Computer?

I doubt there are any viruses for internet-enabled TVs yet (or ever will be), but I wouldn't be surprised if someone eventually comes up with some kind of exploit to do silly things like turn them on and off eg: hackaday.com

1369548 2014-03-06 05:15:00 We have 30Mbps UFB. Our SmartTV is a bit slow but not sure if it improves the speed but seems overly slow compared to my smartphone running Youtube eg .. much of the time I just control it thru my phone. We have a Internet TV box thru WiFi connected to TV via HDMI and that's fine.

We have installed Cat6 cables back of our wardrobes and we WiFi with smartphones and a laptop. For our use WiFi is fine including our G series which is a 54Mbps WiFi. We can do all our interneting, youtubing, social networks. Even with the some hours of TV broadcasting (each day) thru the internet we have no need for a faster connection.

The only benefit of cable is if we are copying a large file from one compuer to the other but we seldom do that.

1369549 2014-03-06 06:20:00 I ran a cable to my tv so I could plug in my Raspbery Pi as I don't have a smart tv. The Pi was very slow on Wifi great on cable gary67 (56)
1369550 2014-03-06 07:11:00 I would just put the same PSK and SID into your new VDSL modem as your current one. That way everything in your network will just continue to work as it does at present. In the unlikely event that your TV does not run to your satisfaction then go to the expense and hassel of running a cable to it. Someone will correct me if I am wrong but it is my belief that your PC should be cable connected to your modem for administration reasons. CliveM (6007)
1369551 2014-03-06 08:01:00 Thanks for the replies.... had decided to have the modem cable connected to my desktop computer - and if necessary run a cable to the TV.... Youtube seems to run well but the browser on the TV is slower.... when fibre is available here I will probably move over to that. Bryden (4161)

I doubt you would need fibre internet, VDSL should be plenty as long as you have a good line. If the browser on the TV is slow it's probably just the program\TV itself, not your internet connection. Remember it will be running on much lower-spec'd hardware than your PC.

1369553 2014-03-06 08:40:00 I have a cable from my VDSL modem in the lounge. My smart TV is in the bedroom. I have run the cable through the ceiling to my bedroom. Works fine. Bobh (5192)
1369554 2014-03-06 09:18:00 If like many households the modem is in your tv room then by all means buy a network cable for a few bucks :) If it is right next to the modem I would go cable. I would go cable also to the bedrooms in terms of future proofing like what we have done. They tend to install the UFB box next to the TV too ...

My Samsung TV, the app is slow. It takes a while just to open the TV app up ....

But over time wireless would just get faster and faster but cable would still be faster than wireless. For the average consumer is it noticeable ...

1369555 2014-03-06 19:14:00 Update the firmware on the TV. Most modern / new Tv's can be updated Speedy Gonzales (78)
