270787 2004-09-09 15:41:00 I am using the latest version of RegClean, supposedly the right one for XP. The first time I used it on this system it worked, since then it hangs 90% of the way through 'Scanning Type Library Identifiers'. I have left it running over night, 9 hours+ without any further progress. RegClean is using 99% of processor resources and 20 MB of ram while this is going on and the buttons are greyed out so the only way to exit is through Task Manager.
I have tried reinstalling the program and running it with all other programs closed with no luck. Any ideas how I can get it working? Vince

270788 2004-09-09 20:50:00 If you are using Version 4.1a, which is the latest I've found with a quick Google search then it is not compatible with XP.

"Version 4.1a build 7364.1 of RegClean works on Windows 95, 98, NT 3.51, NT 4, and 2000. It's from 1997 and still works fine, but is NOT compatible with Windows ME or XP. "

Extract taken from here (www.createwindow.com).

Anyway Regclean has always been pretty crummy from the earliest versions where it tried to disable Netscape :)

There are far better registry cleaners around.

Have a look at the Registry FAQ. (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) There are some mentioned at the bottom of the page.

270791 2004-09-10 20:52:00 Well, have to admit the ones I use are not free, Norton System Utilities, System Mechanic, and the one I prefer is Registry First Aid.

The ToniArts EasyCleaner is free, but it doesn't find as many bad entries as the others, on the other hand, most cleaners will find things that others dont, it's no big deal.

RegCleaner version 4.3.0.780 is free and can still be downloaded from various sites including MajorGeeks here, it works well:
