2004-09-09 09:51:00 | My bro wants to buy a laptop or a PC but he doesnt know which is better... He has a budget of $2000 but can go to $2500 if required.. He wants it to have a dvd writer, 30 to 40gig, doesnt have to have a OS as hes hard out linux fan...lcd screen or a normal CRT screen is fine, doesnt really worry him. Ram to be 256 to 512MB...infrared and network cabibility as he;d be networking with another computer at home. He mainly wants it for Internet/Work stuff but with a bit of gaming now and then, mainly the v8 supercars and cricket 2004. Does anyone know where we can make a PC or Laptop to our customizeations? Or have any to recommend to us? We are also located in Rotorua, so not many good computer stores here until Harvey Normans Opens in October/November...

2004-09-09 10:02:00 | You could make your own PC from different parts, if u had a good PC shop. A lot cheaper than buying a new desktop...And well under 2g. And most probably a bigger hdd as well. I dont think u can make a laptop to specific requirements. As most are already built when u buy them. Umm I spose the only thing is, most mobos come with a header for IRDA, you would still have to buy the adapter for IRDA itself. BUT theyre not too dear. Thats the good thing about laptops I guess. Most these days come with nearly everything onboard. A laptop might be a bit hard if he's into playing games.

2004-09-09 10:12:00 | it is hard to play games on laptops but if ur using keyboard for gaming then i plug in a external keyboard and it is a huge difference and yeah | c_sinclair (5998) | |
2004-09-09 10:25:00 | Is there a serious reason for going for a laptop, does he need to carry his work with him? If you don't truely need to be portable then it is cheaper to stick with a desktop. You get way more bang for your buck. Now if you are traveling around a bit and need the portability then a laptop is the answer. There are plenty of powerful laptops at good prices. My advice is to stick with a brand with good customer support if you are using it for business. Harvey Norman may not be the best choice for a laptop especially for business. After sending mine back to the store for repairs and having to wait 4 weeks for a faulty RAM module to be replaced I would not touch them with a barge pole. If it's serious business get a serious business machine. If it's serious gaming go with a desktop. A bit of both then buy from a reputable agent and make sure you check the warranty serivce. Try Asus I'm sure Metla can offer advice on a number of top notch game capable units. Just remember you gets what you pays for. ;-)

2004-09-09 10:33:00 | hes not quite a gaming kinda guy but plays v8s and cricket when hes not doing his work/assignments as hes doing a couple of courses. but nothing excessive. As long it can handle gaming, work and stuff like that but if we can get a computer with a bit more grunt for the price then thats good :) And I wont go anywhere near harvey normans or tell him 2 go there if its not recommended... And laptop/pc..it doesnt really matter...but as long it has the specs or most of the specs we've written up b4...
