270542 2004-09-09 03:16:00 We keep on hearing about the security risk created by Internet Explorer.

Instead of complaining about it, why not get rid of it?
I have removed it all excepting for the connection wizard.

You can do this with "XPLite" or in Safe Mode. It will not delete in normal mode.
Clean up the registry.

I have made Firefox the default browser and have no problems.

If you do this make sure you make an image of your C drive before hand.
Also make a system restore point.

270544 2004-09-09 03:26:00 Also, in some of the older Windows version, it is virtually impossible to remove/uninstall IE from the desktop.

Most users who are not net-savvy wouldn't have a clue where to start. And most of them don't even think they have an unsecured browser.

I think for once, Firefox will actually have a fighting chance to make a dent in the IE share of the market.

270545 2004-09-09 03:32:00 Why do people keep slagging Interner Explorer. What do ypu THINK is wrong with it.
I have been useing it for maybe 10 years and I have no trouble with it. I have tried all the other free ones and think they are too compliated and are not worth the effort of finding my way around them.
there's nothing wrong with IE.

270546 2004-09-09 04:10:00 IMO internet explorer is too slow. I have been using Firefox for about 3 months now... I went to use IE today and it loads the pages incredibly slower that mozilla! Opera doesn't even compare to firefox. willie_M (5608)
270547 2004-09-09 04:11:00 We are talking security here, not how easy or pretty the alternatives are or are not.

I personally would not recommend getting rid of it, as some sites do not display properly except with IE. To stop the clamor of "report it to the webmaster etc.." , until it happens, you may still need it. I have complained about a site I have to log on for business, and they will not do anything about it.

That said, I wouldn't give up Firefox now. It is begrudgingly that I revert to IE.

270548 2004-09-09 04:11:00 If you like it you stick with it Jack . Mzee on the other hand is asking why people don't deep six it when there are tools that do so, or at least claim to .

Problem is Mzee, it's not that easy to get rid of, sure the icons for various things might be gone and you may be using a different browser so that direct threats are minimised, but IE is still very much there as so much of windows and especially the later versions depend on it's hooks into the OS and even Office app's . Did you know there is even a version of IE 5 embedded in IE 6 to allow compatbility with certain (MS) standards . Try . NET (no thanks) with out it being hooked into the OS, IIRC Media player won't work without IE components . I'm afraid your hooked one way or another .

270549 2004-09-09 04:26:00 Hi Mzee,

I too am on Firefox as default browser, and for IE I have got it checked as "ask if default browser".

Ad-Aware is very much aligned with IE. If you have a look under default settings in Ad-Aware, it has an IE default homepage and search page.

And when you click on "News" when updating it always brings up Internet Explorers home page. It also took the about:blank which I use as homepage for both IE and Firefox as a Dater Miner, critical object -possible Browser Hijack attempt.

I am quite happy to have both browsers on my system. Apart from the incident with Ad-Aware there have been no problems at all.

I did not change to Firefox because of viruses. Nor am I likely to go back to IE even with the new security added with SP2. But its a good feeling to know I have another option to use should I need it.

Regards, Marg.

270550 2004-09-09 04:45:00 Unfortunately Internet Explorer is still needed for Windows updates unless you manually download them without scanning to check which ones are available or which you require. tommy (2826)
270551 2004-09-09 04:47:00 I ride along with JJJJJJ on this one. Tried a few others but over many years have stayed with OE. Scouse (83)
