270744 2004-09-09 10:38:00 Why dosen't he just go into a shop and try them out? That fantastic Harvey Normans have all their computers on Demo, including ones equipped with games.

A small point, if he's a V8 or Cricket addict, are those games compatiable with Linux?

270745 2004-09-09 10:41:00 HN doesnt come till November in Rotorua...

And no the games arent compatiable..he just partitioned his hdd to have 5gig on winxphome and used my copy of winxp home and used it for that..

surely there must be some websites we can check out because Rotorua's stores with computers are basically only bond and bond and noel leemings..nothing decicated to computers...

270747 2004-09-09 10:53:00 arent u allowed to use 1 copy on 2 computers??? c_sinclair (5998)
270748 2004-09-09 10:56:00 I'll give my view. I don't use the computer for any games, video's apart from the odd quictime trailer (rare) and mp3 playback. I don't watch DVD even thou I have a DVD drive. I use MS Office, email and surf the web and the odd photoshop for some photo editing, I typically edit on a 7MB RAW file or 14MB TIF when converted, I find my 2000 model 600Mhz 320MB, 20GB laptop fine for this, its a 12" screen and I used a external mouse and keyboard. I am running win2k and I have no need of upgrading .. nor do I want to.

I don't touch my 1999 2x CD Writer much except backing up data which is seldom.
The computer, yes its not the fastest but its enough for myself.

I care about a stable computer that is maintained. If I look back is maybe I would had bought a cheaper latpop than this 1.2kg ultraportable and the optional baseunit and optional CD/DVD drive, but this is neat for travel instead of taking a digital wallet HDD with my digital camera. Cos then I could had afford a external portable HDD and bought a cheaper and larger laptop. But this laptop on trips is neat too, even when I never connect online.

If I were to get a laptop I would get a cheap one at $1500. A desktop then $600 in parts and a used monitor. I don't see buying an expensive one when I do not need the power and hence tech always pace itself.. If I was in games then I get the same and dumb in a good graphics card. If I had no laptop I prob do this, not sure about the gaming card thou and stuff the laptop .. Then if I need it, I get a portable HDD that accepts mem cards to off load a digicam.

270749 2004-09-09 10:59:00 Recycled Technology 1194 Tutanekai Street opened about 3 months ago. I have dealt with them for 5 years in Hamilton and bought a hell of a lot of components/part systems and new gear from them and they have always been excellent They deal in secondhand and new and are very flexible in configuring hardware to what you want. Reasonable prices too, not the cheapest but then again they are not a fly by night operation and they have good backup.
Worth looking at (especially if you were considering Harvey Norman) and if you do ask for Gary the owner.
No I don't work there but I like to put a good word in for decent small companies.
Laptops are nice and have there place but IMHO a desktop will be a cheaper, more configurable, more powerful bang for your buck option.

270750 2004-09-09 11:07:00 if he is wanting it for those games, iwould be inclined to hit the destkop PC, just think of hte possibilities when he wants other games down the road . . .

he wants a DVD writer - then get a desktop . laptops would be slower per DVD writer and they can be $$ as external . . and used with USB 2 or firefwire at best (the later unlikely) . laptops with internal dvd writer can be expensive!

just of interest what does he need a dvd writer for?

he wants 40GB then again get desktop . 40GB tend not be on the cheapest laptops . when u want a new cpu etc . . u need to sell and buy the laptop!

for the uncertain person or who is not sure how long he can stay with one machine for the long run get a desktop . . . or does he really need the portability? i been in uni etc . . i find it just sits there for a couple of months collecting dust then its packed on a bag in a plane . . and repeated . .

270751 2004-09-09 11:15:00 he told me he wanted a computer, and he has been thinking about laptop coz i have one...but i've said get a desktop one coz of all the upgrading options he would have...so he said to me to find him a good one (pc or laptop) for a good price with a budget of $2000 maybe $2500 depending...

and i asked him 2 tell me what he wants in it..he said 40gigs hdd or a bit more as long the whole system is under $2000...and a dvd writer, i dont live with him so god knows what he wants it for, but its what he wants so i'm not to argue lol..

And I've just told him if he attends Uni or tech or something I can take the PC while he takes my laptop for the duration of the course as I am currently using my laptop as a pc..it hardly is getting moved around at the mean time..so we can swap over if required i dont mind. I only use it (laptop) to watch dvds or come online...no gaming...got my ps2 for that...

So I guess we are looking for a PC not a laptop with the specs asked, and maybe a bit better if possible as long its under budget...

My understanding of the xp eula (prof) 1 unit 1 licence over . It may be different for home . I do not think so .

Win 2k, 1 desktop, 1 laptop ok, Can be stretched to 2 units on different sites, but naughty .

If I am wrong the cavalry will arrive to save you .
