| 270552 | 2004-09-09 05:09:00 | We need that poor excuse of a browser to use the ActiveX controls on sites like Windows Update which won't work properly without it. Firefox is good for 99.9% of the sites, but think of Internet Explorer as a little program used to only install the updates. |

| 270553 | 2004-09-09 05:16:00 | Why use WindowsUpdate when you should be getting them done automatically for you! Ditch the bugger! My family use WinXP, and here's how I killed it for good: Booted Knoppix Ran: mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1 -o umask=000 cd /mnt/hda1/Program\ Files/ mv Internet\ Explorer IEBackup cp -Rv MozillaFirefox Internet\ Explorer cd Internet\ Explorer (Which is really now firefox) cp firefox.exe iexplore.exe shutdown -r now Thats it - Done! IE is gone for good (Although you can still open My Computer, put http://www.google.co.nz in the Address Bar and it tries to switch to IE, but ends up saying "Something broke so Im running in a Safe Compatibility Mode"). Firefox will load up when you try and use IE, its brilliant! Works fine.. Even MSN Messenger now brings up Hotmail in Firefox (Bliss!). Chill. |

Do not forget the iexplorer.exe is just a "front end" for the spyglass HTML engine, which is used by the desktop, file explorer and windows help. Now if you could replace that with the GEKO engine your system would be a lot safer!! Only problem is you cant replace the spyglass engine, unless someone has figured it out? As for the windows update issue, there is a standalone update scanner avaliable from microsoft(tm) that will generate a list of updates a computer needs. |

MS Security Analyser, unfortunately, is not that accurate and only checks for security issues. False positives and missed updates can and do happen but, I guess it's better than nothing plus downloading rather than auto updating allows you to filter the offerings to some extent. And yes, I thought XP required IE (or bits of it) to drive the desktop. I think the task has got too big for anyone to extract it neatly from the OS as per the offerings for win9x Cheers Murray P |

Chilli, You write a lot of these they are good so are you, Why do you never write one that has a full set of instructions, Starting from the GUI in KDE. Then many more people would be abel to try what you advocated |

Because this can be done with Damn Small Linux (http://damnsmalllinux.org) or any other Live Distro :-) DSL is only 50mb... And for a lot of people now on JetStream (Surf, Starter, whatever) 50MB isnt that much of a download.... But hey.... > Then many more people would be abel to try what you > advocated Alrighty.... Im in Yoper right now, and I dont have Doze at all, so this is going on a purely hypothetical basis. If somebody can try this and get back to me about this, that'd be awesome! Boot Knoppix Click on the desktop Icon for hda1 (Assuming this is your Windows drive) Click on the lil penguin in the Taskbar and click on Root Terminal Type: remountrw /dev/hda1 (This is the part Im grey on, I can only remember using remountrw once....) type: exit Now, back to your Konqueror window.... Click on Program Files Right-Click on Internet Explorer and choose Rename. Call it IE_Sucks or something, take your pick, you wont be missing it... We're renaming it though, just in case you _should_ ever need it. Right-click on MozillaFirefox and choose Copy. Click on a folder, any folder will do.... I usually click on the old IE folder, just so I know where Im going. Right-click in this new folder and choose Paste You should have just pasted a copy of Firefox into another folder (The old IE one). Rename this Firefox folder to "Internet Explorer". Right-click on "Internet Explorer" which is really firefox, and choose Cut Click on the little Upwards pointing arrow to go back to your Program Files directory Right-click and choose Paste Now, click on "Internet Explorer" (Firefox) Right-click on the firefox.exe file and choose Copy Click on the Up Arrow again to go back to the Program Files directory Right-Click and choose Paste Rename firefox.exe to iexplore.exe Right-click on iexplore.exe and choose cut Click on "Internet Explorer" Right-click and choose paste Click on the KMenu, Click Logout, and click Restart .....Now you know why I chose the quick, easy, yet for some scary (using bash) way of typing it ;-) Can somebody volunteer to get back to me about remountrw? I dont have Doze handy.... And I've left my Knoppix Disc's at work. Chill. |

| 270558 | 2004-09-09 10:01:00 | Thank you, if I had fire fox, or something else I would run the exercise for you. I will get another brouser(sp?) and follow it exactly later. Please Sir, May we have some more? Like how to install a downloaded RPM in MDK 9.2/10, Presuming it has been down loaded in windows and placed in users home directory. In the same style. Why MDK 9.2/10, because it is a simple GUI install, any windows user can do it. Dick smith has sold thousands of copies of the download on CD, many people need that sort of help. I am not quite good enough to write it properly. You are, I will edit for you if you wish, but I dont think you really need me to do that, as you worked for P.C.W. |

| 270559 | 2004-09-09 10:11:00 | > Because this can be done with > Damn Small Linux (http://damnsmalllinux.org) > or any other Live Distro :-) I presume this would also work for any system dual booting Linux & Windows? Can you clarify a few things for me Chill? They're in brackets next ti the instructions. > Boot Knoppix (or any Linux with mnt/hdaXX?) > Click on the desktop Icon for hda1 (Assuming this is > your Windows drive) > Click on the lil penguin in the Taskbar and click on > Root Terminal > Type: > remountrw /dev/hda1 (This is the part Im grey on, I > can only remember using remountrw once....) (so you don't want your windows partition to be already mounted or are you assuming auto mount?) > type: > exit > Now, back to your Konqueror window.... (just for clarity, this is the window you viewed your windows partition in previously, ie, mounted and chose browse with File Manager or some such) > Click on Program Files > Right-Click on Internet Explorer and choose Rename. > Call it IE_Sucks or something, take your pick, you > wont be missing it... We're renaming it though, just > in case you _should_ ever need it. (rename the folder or .exe?) > Right-click on MozillaFirefox and choose Copy. (the folder or .exe?) I'll stop there because those last two are critical to the rest. Cheers Murray P |

| 270561 | 2004-09-09 11:03:00 | As an alternative to Windows update, try using HFNetChk from Shavlik. http://www.shavlik.com. Download requires registration however it allows you to scan and update 1 - 10 PCs free. Shavlik developed the technology for MSBA., it is very intuitive and easy to use. HFNetChk can run as a service and will have some impact on your system but you can always set it to manual. It does say it requires IE5.5 but I'm sure there are ways around it ;-) |
