270963 2004-09-10 09:41:00 A friend of mine has purchased a Packard Bell I-Media 828 pc.
It's running Win XP home.
Last night I was around and put on his internet connection and loaded the antivirus and various programs such as Spybot and Adaware.

It was funny for a PC that was out of the box two weeks ago already had 3 nasty virus and trojans on it despite not being on the web. Yep some disks had been inserted but I checked them all and they were clean.

In passing I asked about the DVD writer and mentioned regions and locking the drive.
He rang me today and has determined that there is one region change left before the drive firmware will lock the drive.

Looking thru some of the old posts, programs previously mentioned are Region Free & Region Killer.

Whats best, stop it from locking the region or get a software workaround for afterwards? I have no idea what make the drive that is installed , i do know it is DVD -R

There were no recovery disks supplied either nor a copy of XP. I determined that it's on a recovery partition on the harddrive and there is a program to make the disks installed. Hmmm some manufacturers I guess, it's a problem when you have a total novice buying their 1st PC and not knowing the traps and pitfalls.

So are Region free or Region Killer still the preferred apps or are there others to avoid a firmware lock.

Cheers]

What were the trojans and viruses?

That is correct . To perform a reinstall or reformat one needs to tap the F10 key when booting up to access the reinstaller . It would also be a good idea to create the setup discs now with the supplied program in case of future problems .
