i am looking at getting a printer or multifunction. Looking at spending sub $300 hopefully, and i am wondering whether there are any recommendations/ones to avoid that anybody may wish to share with me ?

270845 2004-09-10 00:07:00 If you burn CD's the Epson R210 prints directly onto CD (with the right blanks). Thats just under 300.

Or if you're into photos, HP Photsmart printers are good. Prints good quality photos. A tad over 300 @ 339.

Depends what you want to do or print. If plain old printing, anything will do.

270846 2004-09-10 00:15:00 The trouble with the relatively cheaper printers is that while the up-front cost is small, the ongoing cost of cartridges (toner or ink) can be expensive. A cheaper printer can be a false economy in the long run, although that depends on how much printing you do.

Beware of the Brother toner set-up, whilst the toner cartridge is relatively dirt cheap, in a lot of cases you need to get a new drum every 3 cartridges - the cost of the drum is about the same price as a new printer. Dollar for dollar even though the toner cartridges for the HP printers appear expensive, they aren't that bad once you bring in the cost of the drum for the Brother printers. Plus there are a number of reliable & reputable compatible HP toner cartridge suppliers around to bring the consumable cost down further.
