271054 2004-09-11 09:23:00 Hi metla, have just read your first mail again, you are quite right, you did mention the DISCONNECT button; you suggested to make a shortcut, but I can't work out where to shortcut from? Please let me know. Thanks
Cheers

271056 2004-09-11 22:07:00 Hi johnboy, thanks for going to the trouble of sending me all these links. Had a look through them all - still no luck getting my icon back. Some solutions suggest registry adjustments - don't feel confident enough to attempt that. I'm afraid I just have to put up with it; can still use the computer normally, but disconnecting from the net is a bit awkward - have to log off and then click YES on the window which says "....................do you want to close down your network connection"
Thanks again.

271057 2004-09-11 22:19:00 Hi Fritz
I had this very problem a few months back and got this advice from godfather, wich worked like a dream.

Start - Run -
type

SFC /scannow

enter

Nore the space between SFC and /scannow

This will check all system files and replace any damaged.

Not guaranteed to work, but should be done after your problem, as a starting point. You may be asked to insert your XP CD if the files needed are not in the HDD cache.

Hope this helps.

271058 2004-09-12 01:17:00 Another solution amongst the many causes, is to UNtick the box , then restart computer, and then put the tick back in the box. Pheonix (280)
271059 2004-09-12 01:19:00 Hi Donna, Thanks for your post. I did what you suggested; I then was asked to put my Windows XP disk in. A screen popped up giving me several options like 'Install Windows XP' 'Additional Tasks' etc. etc. didn't click any of them but clicked 'Exit' hope that was the correct thing to do. It first looked fine but then the process stopped about a third of the way and the curser froze. The same thing happened after trying it again, but the blue download line stopped in a slightly different place. As your suggestion sounded very promising I would be grateful for any further comments you might have. Thanks

271060 2004-09-12 01:22:00 Thanks Phoenix, that was one of the first things I tried, thought it might have got out of step. Thanks anyway.

Hold down the Shift key when you close the CD drawer to prevent the CD autorun. Windows should then be able to run Scannow.

271062 2004-09-12 02:16:00 Hi Fritz
Thats a bit of a bugger, and I cannot shed any mroe light on it as it worked just dandy for me first time. Go with Tommy's suggestion and hopefully that will work.

271063 2004-09-12 03:04:00 Thanks Donna and Tommy, have tried the shift key trick - didn't work; it actually froze up even before I was asked to put the Windows XP disk in.
Cheers
