2004-09-10 09:44:00 | My 2 Meg Telstra cable connection has worked fine for 4 weeks, but two mornings ago could not get a connection. OE halted at "Finding host".Reverted to dialup and everything was OK. Telstra checked line and modem and said all OK. I reseated the card, reinstalled IE/OE, checked all the IP settings etc etc. Reset IE/OE for LAN, and everything worked for an hour or so. But half an hour later back to "Finding host". Reverted to dialup. Tonight installed fresh Ethernet card and LAN cable. Same result. I conclude problem is in software. Ideas anyone ? (Dialup is so sloooooow....) Tony

2004-09-10 09:58:00 | Hi Tony, why not get Telstra to replace the modem? It may be an intermittent or temperature dependent fault. | Terry Porritt (14) | |
2004-09-10 10:09:00 | HI Terry. Modem had checked OK, and for several times during the day it all went OK. I'll have a check tomorrow or maybe later tonight if they are not too busy. I still suspect it is software. Tony

2004-09-10 10:40:00 | Telstra said line, modem and card OK. I remain puzzled. must be software, but what ? Tony

2004-09-10 11:37:00 | I should add that Agent and Opera can't get out, just like IE/OE. have shifted Ethernet card and Winmodem to different PCI slots just in case. What next. Puzzle is that it worked OK one night but not next morning, but several times later in the day. These intermittent things are a curse to sort out. Cheers anyway Tony

2004-09-10 13:53:00 | Sounds very much like hardware or lines problems Tony. I'd be tempted to make another polite enquiry of Telstra. Have you done a search of common issues with that particular cable modem, Surfboard is it? Cheers Murray P

2004-09-10 20:37:00 | I'd go along with Murray, a software fault would tend to be more reproducible, whereas a hardware intermittent may check out OK several times in a row by Telstra, then when you try it , it goes wonky again. Since the modem is rented, it is no skin off Telstra's nose to replace it to help pin-point the problem.

2004-09-10 22:58:00 | Modem checked out just now with Telstra - OK. But just discovered that I cannot ping the modem - "unreachable". Fitted spare cable, same result. What does that tell us about a blockage in my PC ?? Tony

2004-09-10 23:22:00 | take anything telstra tells you with a grain of salt. In the meantime however, if you suspect a network problem, grab ethereal and get it to sniff your packets while you go about doing what you would normally do. when the fault occurs, check the packetdump to see what happens packetwise at about the time or just before you noticed the problem. If you can see a pattern forming in the packets, then you may be on to something. Otherwise, try another PC on the connection. Standard process of elimination applies...
