271492 2004-09-12 01:53:00 I am unable to boot my laptop in any mode after installing XP SP2 from PCW disk. I thought I needed 900MB of free space (readme file) but I see in PCW magazine this morning I should've had 2GB. There was about 1.75GB. What are my options (besides reading instructions thoroughly next time)? jim cleland (6147)
271493 2004-09-12 02:03:00 I think the only option available to you is a reinstall of XP Davesdad (923)
271494 2004-09-12 02:07:00 What actually happens?

On my desktop, I had 700mb free space before SP2. Now all that happens is the "Home Edition" is gone, and there are blue dots not green.

Can you give a bit more detail about what happenes?

The apology screen loads at startup with various options including Safe Mode, Last Known Config & Start Windows normally - none of which work. I did have XP Professional.

Windows.

271497 2004-09-12 13:12:00 Metla,

Is it nessary/should you, use another utility, to do a data backup/copy save, before doing that, just in case?

271498 2004-09-12 13:16:00 In a perfect world one would/should have made an image or current back-up before installing sp2 in the first place.

If it was me i would remove the drive, plug it into another comp and copy over all the personal/needed files, others have there own preferred methods.

I haven't performed the steps as described in my prior post, but basicly yes,Back dat **** up.

271500 2004-09-13 12:14:00 Thanks metla, your help is much appreciated.
I haven't had time to try your suggested solution. I have a slightly dated BU on CD of the most important files. Unfortunately I don't have a disk of Win XP Pro, which was loaded ready for me to activate when I bought the Acer TravelMate 230 from DSE. I will buy a new copy assuming I can reinstall it if your solution doesn't work. I don't have another comp to load the drive into.

Why you have to "BUY"anything .

The unit should have a disk, or a way of acessing a "Hidden partion " to copy the original setup inf .

Mr DSE Should at least tell you how to do this .

Or did he tell you how to make a back up of this, that did not happen?
