271369 2004-09-11 21:54:00 Hiya guys

I've just completed a fresh install of WinXP on the wife's lappie (after much pain and tears). All the basics loaded, nice *Wiping blood out of eyes**sob*

What I need to know *bending back broken finger* is how I can make it easy for myself to do this again *shudder**pain* - I should probably copy an image to a CD?

Now I am a stupid guy *in great pain* (coz apparently I caused her lappie to be buggered up) and I don't know sh*t from a shinola regarding images or backups.

Anybody willing to advise me?

Thanks

*Please honey, don't hit me any more!!!!*

271373 2004-09-12 03:49:00 Norton Ghost is very good, so is 'Power Quest Drive Image 2002'

A full reinstall of your active partition takes about 8 minutes max.

271376 2004-09-12 09:02:00 I use Ghost to image a hard drive myself.
As far as I understand it there is nothing wrong with other imaging programs as well.

I image one hard drive to another hard drive with all partitions.

I have to say that this method may ( and probably won't ) work on a laptop.

I ask how will you fit two physical hard drives into a laptop? I don't think it can be done. Having said that you could use an external USB hard drive. These cost money though.

Any backup or image is one heck of a lot better than having no backup though.

Just my opinion.

An image to a CD will not work for me. I currently have a 40 Gig C drive and half of this is used. I don't think I can fit an image of my C:\ drive on one CDR or even a DVD at 4.7 Gigs. I am aware I can go and buy more software to span CDR for backup. It is cheaper and more convenient to image one hard drive to another. I don't have a problem swapping disks when one floppy, CD or DVD gets full.

Another thing I will mention is that quite a few backups under Windows will not in fact backup a whole hard drive. All files which are being used by Windows at the time of the backup will not be backed up for example.

One other thing that can be done assuming you are not using a NTFS file system is to backup using WinZip, PKZip etc.

As a backup I would suggest you copy all files you have created like documents, spreadsheets, databases, favourites, contacts, quickbooks accounts, banking information, passwords for the isp and banking passwords and etc. You are likely to fit all this on one CDR. Photos are another issue. If you have a digital camera or scanner some files may get rather large.

271377 2004-09-12 09:11:00 In the Ghost 2003 Disk Wizard, there is an option to make TCP/IP peer-to-peer imaging disks for use with Ghost. As long as you have some free space on a desktop PC and some network cable, you can make an image of the laptop, no problems. :) wintertide (1306)

simple answer yes
Drive Image Pro, network boot disk with ODI drivers with image file on a network share works a treat
