271502 2004-09-13 13:53:00 Drb1 is right, you should at least have a recovery CD which will take you through basically the same steps (hopefully) but the OS files required will be on a hidden partition on the hard drive which the recovery CD will initiate access to. This aoprtition should be unaffected by your current drive space issue. If you do a repair, your data should be ok, apart from the odd driver, tweak, and programmes which can be reloaded.

The CD will probably have the laptop makers name splashed all over it rather than MS Windows.

Cheers Murray P

PS. Don't you just hate proprietary OS installations/recovery partitions.

Murray,

I think they suck,

Especially if some one writes zeroes to all the tracks, and reformats because they did not know it was there (or forgot to look, or were told to do so, by some one)

Can you do that with a laptop hard drive? Remove it and plug it in to a desktop PC?

Of course .

You just need a 2 . 5" to 3 . 5" IDE converter adapter, they are quite cheap ($18 at DSE) .

Normal caveats apply (setting jumpers as required for master/slave) . A HDD is a HDD apart from that . Its standard practice for recovering data .

Is there not something a little different on laptop drives regarding jumpers.

Ah. Always thought lappie hdds were pretty much unremovable. Learn something new every day I guess. ;-)

Thx godfather.

271508 2004-09-13 23:06:00 Ice,

If you can get the old parts from scraps you can make the IDE adapter it is just a straight hook up, no electronics, Can be made from an old ide drive male pin block and the mount block out of an old laptop which i think is female link them on a board straight through back to back.

They are only $14-00 to buy though.

Jumpers are smaller, thats all. If you attach on the secondary IDE on a desktop (setting any other device to slave on that port), then you can usually leave the thing set as Master anyway. Thats how I do it.

As to removal of HDD, on my laptop its easier than on a desktop. 2 screws and it unplugs.

Thank you, probably explains it, they are that small I can see them.

Murray, I am embarrassed to say this was very helpful! I have not worked with partitions. Will the Recovery CD reformat my hard drive or can I interrupt it to run System Restore / Recovery?
