271734 2004-09-13 00:08:00 I am the "Comp Admin" at my house. Most of my family members are pretty computer illiterate, and since I'm doing an IT course, I thought I'd do the honours of maintaining our family computer. Though I'm just a newbie at being an admin.
For instance, my younger brother has a friend who is pretty computer savvy and when he is at out house he likes to play around on the computer. Iv'e restricted access to 3 admin tool features for example under win XP pro. However, a User(which everyone is, except me) still has access to Event Viewer, Component Services, Performance,
and Data Sources(ODBC). Can a User do any anything to the settings in these features that may crash the system or something else not so nice?

271736 2004-09-13 01:15:00 Do you have spybot installed if so go tools then tweaks and you can lock the control panel down so it can't be opened which should stop the casual user access.
have a look at this page also.

271737 2004-09-13 01:28:00 a few ifs here
if your file system is NTFS
if your users are not supervisors (administrators) of the pc or able to logon as one
They will not be able to do any mischief to your pc they will most proberly get "insufficient rights to preform this action" message if its something likely to endanger your system integrity

Note:
You should only have possibly two user accounts that have admin rights (1 for backup) you unless performing system admin should also login as a nonadministrator for normal day to day work

What is Spybot? Can I download this utility?

271740 2004-09-13 01:46:00 Spybot is a spyware/malware search and removal program. Much used and recommended at this forum. Look it up on the net. The "advanced"mode is not to be used lightly. Get used to it first. Cheers. mark c (247)

It's standard good administrative practice.

Just like on a linux box there is only one root account, you do your day to day work as a user and only log in as root when you need to do something that requires it.

271742 2004-09-13 01:51:00 personal choice Stu
reason; I would never use the administrator account that was used to first setup Xp as I would not what to currupt it I would use it only for recovery purposes, the other admin account for day to day system maintance.
