271916 2004-09-13 07:23:00 My friend has a system running Windows 2000 Pro and an Epson Stylus Colour 600 printer. Up until recently the printer has been performing Ok.
Now it is just printing garbage and when a print job is sent to it, it just continues feeding paper through and printing garbage.
I have replaced the cable (parallel) with a new one, I have installed updated drivers, I've changed the parallel port settings in the BIOS and still no joy.
I've confirmed that the printer is Ok (in theory) by doing a self-test and it seems to be Ok.

The first page that it prints out normally has this at the top:

REMOTEPMSNGU
IECQC

followed by a whole lot of garbage down the left hand side of the paper.

I've just about run out of options here, short of re-installing Windows. Does any one know of a good printer diagnostics utility that can look at what's going on and tell me where the problem might be?

271917 2004-09-13 07:56:00 Odd.

It sounds like some sort of diagnostic mode.

IEC quality assessment system for electronic components (IECQ) is a "recognised term". The REOTEPMSNGU is almost believable as a remote printer ... something or other.

I wonder if it has a dipswitch or similar internally for setting a diagnostic mode, and it has malfunctioned?

271918 2004-09-13 08:16:00 are you certain the PC is virus free as some viruses will cause the printer to spew out gobledygook, bugbear is one of them and there are others as well 45South (4769)

271920 2004-09-13 09:37:00 It's not trying to print ghostscript by any chance? R2x1 (4628)
271921 2004-09-13 10:52:00 Have you tried printing a test page from Start -> Control Panel -> Printers, Right Click, Properties -> Print Test Page? If that doesn't work then there are some serious problems. If it does work the next thing to do is trying printing a few lines out of notepad. Let us know how you get on.
