271808 2004-09-13 00:33:00 I have recently purchased a laptop and wish to file share, I then went and bought a belkin desktop network PCI card for my desktop and a crossover cable, followed the installation instructions, (I run Windows XP by the way) using the network wizard. I can now obtain the internet on both machines when the desktop alone is connected, but I am having a problem getting the file sharing operation to work, is there anyone who can assist with my dilemma bridge (6152)
271809 2004-09-13 00:45:00 Have you set up access permission on both PC's and chosen and enabled folders to share.

Have a look at Windows Networking (www.wown.com)

271811 2004-09-13 01:21:00 Not sure in XP but if it's similar to win2k then right click a folder > choose Sharing (if not already done) > Permissions button > enter username and password. I use the same on both PC's, when you open a folder on the network you will be prompted to enter a Username and Password.

271812 2004-09-13 02:09:00 You dont need permissions for XP when networked. Just as long as simple file sharing is ticked. You dont have to add anyone as a guest.

And if a firewall is running, configure it so the other PC can share.

271813 2004-09-13 02:13:00 Assuming you have done everything right, the most common reason for a LAN to not work is a firewall. Check the XP native firewall or any other firewall (Zonealarm, Nortons, ....). JohnD (509)
