272468 2004-09-15 02:24:00 Hi, I recently lost my phone charger and have just bought a new one. However, before I use it I wanted to ask the members here about voltage.

I use the charger on 2 mobile phones - one is a Nokia 2100 and the other is a Nokia 2280 - both batteries in these phones are Li-Ion 3.7 volts. The charger I was sold says "output : 4.5V-9.5V, max 800mA" and the salesperson assured me this was the correct charger.

I have had a look through the FAQ here, plus Nokia & Ask Jeeves to no avail. So my question is can I use this charger on these phones without damaging the batteries?

Thanks, Andrew

272469 2004-09-15 02:54:00 Is this a universal from DSE or similar with selectable output? The original was probably a Nokia ACP-7A 3.7V. PaulD (232)
272470 2004-09-15 02:59:00 The phone has a circuit between the external connector and the battery which controlls the whole charging process. So it needs more volts from the external source than the nominal voltage of the battery.

Li Ion batteries have very special characteristics so they have a very clever charging circuit.

That power block you bought should be fine ... but I wonder about the "4.5-9.5" voltage. Has it got a switch to select a voltage? If so, I would start at the lowest, and move up until the phone says it's charging. THe main thing to check for is the polarity. It can be fatal if the wrong polarity is applied. Not all manufacturers include protection. (It would cost at least .002 cents. ;-))

I think most use centre positive ... but it would pay to check with someone else's power unit before you commit yourself. :D

Remember with DSE if it doesn't work, take it back.

If it was sold with the assurance its OK and it wipes out the phone, look forward to a new (free) phone.

Either way, what have you got to lose?

272472 2004-09-15 08:08:00 Hi everyone and thanks for your replies. I took the plunge and so far there are no buring smells emanating from my phone and the phone is not acting like it's on speed, so fingers crossed it will be ok.

BTW it was from a Vodafone outlet (not DSE) and it is a generic Nokia charger in Vodafone packaging. There is no external voltage switch - I suspect it is an internal thing.

Cheers, Andrew

272473 2004-09-15 22:01:00 Andrew and WTF - I've deleted the rest of the posts between you two for obvious reasons.

WTF - I've let you stay on with your username, even though it’s an obscene acronym, because you had it before we put that rule in place. But I will not accept you using other acronyms in posts such as you used in the deleted posts. Let's keep the language clean please.

You kicked this one off with a less than friendly reply to Andrew's query. Cut them out please. If you can't make a pleasant reply to someone, then don't reply and move on to another thread.

I'm asking you to back off the sarcasm which lately you've been resorting too. I'm sick of banning people and would appreciate an effort by all concerned to chill out, and be nice so I don't have to morph into Bruce the Nazi Boy.
