272442 2004-09-15 00:56:00 I am currently in Tonga and am trying to sort out an IBM PC300GL with an S3 trio display adapter built in running Win NT sp6 at a mission. I have download the correct driver from IBM and it installs fine but upon a reboot (which it asks you to do) it says there is a problem with desk.cpl and reverts to the standard windows vga driver. No matter how many times I try (even starting in vga mode, reinstalling sp6, installing ie6) it fails to load upon restrt. Has anyone got any ideas ? craigtnz (5622)
272443 2004-09-15 05:24:00 You may want to try getting a driver from the manufacturers site... I don't mean IBM. S3 is made by Cirrus Logic I think...they may possibly have a NT compatible driver?

cheers

272444 2004-09-15 05:39:00 Hate to disagree with the Cheif....but,here i go.

The ibm supplied driver is the one to get,if its specified for that model then that is your best and possibly only option, although in a pinch or last resort then maybe get the driver from the chipset manufacturer, but there is no garentee and slim chance that they will be compatible.

Personally i have found IBM to have excellent driver suport.

So,if we conclude you have the correct driver then it must be something else.....like a failed video chipset,Can you give us any background info on the issue?,anything else happen when the video display failed?....lightning?

or has the comp been formatted,if so for what reason?

etc etc.

272445 2004-09-15 06:59:00 Ditto, I've just done the same with the exact same model IBM machine last week. Downloaded the s3 drivers off IBM and they went fine. Did the vanilla NT SP6 install go okay? jeep (1673)
272446 2004-09-15 09:29:00 Thanks for the prompt response everyone. I have triple checked I have the correct driver for that model IBM but havent tried from the manufacture. It has never gone correctly since being re-formated some time last year (its just become a pain viewing web pages in 16 colours). sp6 installed fine and there are no errors in the event logs. I suspected a virus but they have been running AVG which hasnt reported anything. My last resort was to re-format and start from scratch but I hoped someone might have struck this before. craigtnz (5622)
