272423 2004-09-14 23:13:00 I have a small Microsoft Lan with 1 M/Soft dhcp server .

This server is also my net gateway form my shared net connection .

I have i machine with MDK 9 . 2 as an experiment .

Recently I started the MDK unit on its own, then started the M/soft dhcp unit . The mdk unit still reported the network as down in MDK control center after the dhcp unit was up .

In lin N/Hood (the equivelent of M/soft, network N/Hood) I can find no way of activating the down connection .

If I restart the MDK unit all is well .

Can any body tell me a simpler way of resolving this

any pointers also

272424 2004-09-14 23:35:00 Im no Mandrake expert and so I dont know what GUI tools Mandrake have.

IIRC - There's something called Drakconf which does the job.

You can get the dynamic IP reassigned by typing the following in a Bash prompt (console):
su -
[enter root password]
ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 up

Let me know how you get on

272425 2004-09-15 03:22:00 If the DHCP isn't going when the Linux network service starts up, it will give itself the 127 . 0 . 0 . 1 IP address .

Since it has an IP address, it will see no reason to go looking for another one . :D

You could put a test in /etc/init . d/rc . local to check the IP address it has at the very end of the boot process, and if it's 127 . 0 . 0 . 1 start a cron (or at ?) process to run every five minutes . That task would check the IP address, and do service network restart if necessary .

272426 2004-09-15 07:58:00 Chilli,

Applications list--Configuration--Configure comp--Enter root p/w--MDK control centre--Network & net--Drakconnect

Takes you to a configuration panel but this does not seem to have anything to “Activate” an already configured connection that is “Down” .

I have found by trial and error, if you try to connect to the net when the eth0 is shown as down (in drak connect) it will activate eth0 and connect to the DHCP when trying to connect to the net, even if the net connection is down .

But I haven’t found any proper way to connect or disconnect to/from the LAN, in the MDK GUI, like the windows LAN connect/disconnect feature, or anything to show any sort of connected icon/indicator in the task bar or else were .

This is a command line instruction; I am not at all experienced with the MDK text command .

I put in
su
[p/w]
ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 up

And I get

and it stops, the dhcp is sending but receiving nothing .

272428 2004-09-15 12:11:00 Odd....

Personally I would try and use a static IP Address:
su -
[root pw]
ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.123
route add default gw 192.168.0.1
echo "nameserver 192.168.0.1" > /etc/resolv.conf

Now, what this is doing:
Becoming root user so you can change things
Turning off your LAN connection
Turning ON your LAN connection with 192.168.0.123 as your IP Address
settings the default gateway to the internet as 192.168.0.1
Then setting the default DNS server. The last line need only ever be done once.

FIRSTLY:
Try what Graham suggested:
su -
[root pw]
server network restart

Hope this helps

Chill,

If I boot with dhcp server on address assigned /acquired is always 192 . 168 . 0 . 189

Su
P/w

“ifconfig(space)eth0(space)down(enter)”
“exit(enter)”

Does not turn eth0 off?

But I noticed in verbose shut down, that samba and 1 or 2 related processes had “failed”, when they normally show “ok” . Had these processes been “Killed” by the “eth0 down” command?

The card is a normal 3com 905btx

Is “server(space)network(space)restart(enter)” what you type, or . is it a group of commands you must enter?

When you start MDK, with the “dhcp server” down, in verbose start up, MDK claims the address “127 . 255 . 255 . 255”

Direction and thoughts would be appreciated

Dianne .
