272195 2004-09-14 04:02:00 It might be a stupid request, but can anybody assist me with my networking problem, I have windows XP running on my desktop and my laptop, I have installed a network PCI card into my desktop and gone through all my wizard to set up, (I have now done this twice with frustration). I can obtain internet on both computers with no problem by having my desktop connected, but I am having a lot of trouble with trying to get my computers to see each other and file/printer share, I am sure that I have followed instructions to the letter but I am now lost which way to go, if there is an answer I would be so happy to find out where I am going wrong bridge (6152)
272196 2004-09-14 04:09:00 Dont use the wizard it's useless. Under both LAN icons type the ip in manually under properties/TCP/IP (Use the following IP)

And make sure BOTH have the same workgroup.

What type of firewall?
You may need to setup an advanced rule to allow network access.

272201 2004-09-14 04:40:00 Check out the forum's Networking FAQ (#60). Link to FAQs top right of this page. Susan B (19)
272202 2004-09-14 05:53:00 on the desktop pc
I have put 192.168.0.1 in the line marked ip address
subnet is 255.255.255.0
there is nowhere to put the 2nd line (192.168.0.(number between 2 and 254)
and on my second laptop what do i open to change the gateway, since if i open my lan there are no boxes for the number 192.168.0 etc or am i opening the wrong connection
sorry bout all these questions, i sound like a right dumbo

272203 2004-09-14 07:36:00 You need to share a folder on each computer. If you are using the Windows XP firewall you will have to disable it to allow each computer to see each other. Use another firewall. If you already use another firewall you need to configure it to enable file sharing.

Go to the FAQ I mentioned and check out the tips at the end and preferably read the whole thing. It wasn't written for Win XP so there are differences but the basics are pretty much the same. Just follow your nose.

I think that number is supposed to go on the other computer.

Sorry I missed a bit
On the Laptop the ip address start with 192.168.0. and choose a number between 2 and 254 such as 192.168.0.2

To check your address on your laptop, open Network Connections, right click on the LAN connection, select properties, click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click on the Properties button and it will display the IP addresses. Make sure there is a green dot next to Use the following IP addresses and enter in the addresses I mentioned earlier.

Are you using Windows XP firewall or a third party firewall?
