2004-09-13 09:48:00 | Another example of the way Trademe do business . . . Unless I am mistaken, the autobid feature has changed without anyone being notified . Now, instead of simply leading the bidding up to a certain amount, should your autobid exceed the reserve of the auction, your autobid automatically bids you up to the reserve amount . I'm not happy about that at all . Lo .

2004-09-13 09:48:00 | " You now lead the bidding. Your auto-bid is greater than reserve - so bidding has escalated to the reserve price. You will be notified if your auto-bid is exceeded." Nice new message, eh? Lo.

2004-09-13 10:05:00 | Explain please. When your auto-bid exceeds the reserve, you say "your autobid automatically bids you up to the reserve amount". But, in order for that to happen, you have already exceeded the reserve amount. Does that mean just that your autobid is lowered automatically to meet the reserve, when it could have exceeded it. If so, isn't that a good thing? Sorry, it does not make sense, so it must be me?

2004-09-13 10:08:00 | Previously, if I knew i was under reserve, I could autobid and not exceed the reserve . . . then when you ask the seller to "offer" the item, you could generally get a price lower than the reserve . Now . . . that's no longer possible . I used to use this as a way of getting items cheaper than reserve . Lo .

"If your auto-bid is greater than the reserve price, a bid will be placed for you that is equal to the reserve" That prevents your auto-bid exceeding the reserve, which should be to your advantage? What is your problem with something designed to save you money? |

2004-09-13 10:12:00 | But you are not forced to use auto-bid. And you can set a maximum amount. "To place an auto-bid, specify the maximum amount you are prepared to pay in the bid box and tick the auto-bid option." Sorry, don't see a problem. Why do you not set it to below the reserve.

2004-09-13 10:16:00 | No, it's definitely not a benefit. I put in an autobid higher than reserve in anticipation that no one will bid in the last minute to beat me in an auction. I am prepared to pay OVER the reserve, hence the autobid to ensure no one can beat me and I will still win with people putting in last minute bids. eg. Item has reserve of $100. I bid $50 with an autobid up to $150. Now if the item is not popular and I really want the product, then there is a chance the auction will finish under reserve, and I will contact the seller asking him/her to offer me the item. Generally, it is offered at a price lower than the reserve. Now, the issue is that if my autobid meets the reserve, then I could end up paying more for it. Secondly, same scenario, but autobid only up to $105. In this situation, my $50 bid automatically jumps to reserve. There are other people out there who previously had to bid $55, $60, $65... and then end up giving up. Now, with one or two bids after the reserve is met, my autobid is overtaken easily. Therefore no, it's not a good thing for me as a buyer, because it opens me up to meeting the reserve and having less protection against last minute bidders. It's great for Trademe, because they guarantee themselves a sale, and commission. Lo.
