272773 2004-09-16 00:11:00 Informative article in the Sydney Morning Herald about the uptake and state of broadband in South Korea:

www.smh.com.au

The statement that stood out for me is: "The Government's Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) expects that 70 per cent of internet connections will exceed 20 Mbps by the end of 2006, and that most will be at 100 Mbps by the end of the decade."

Read it and weep.

272774 2004-09-16 00:19:00 And here am I - Asking for flat-rate 256kbps ADSL.... 512 with a 50GB cap perhaps?

Is it too much to ask that these services come to the average home user at a reasonable price?!

Korea.

I do not honestly think you would want to live there, full time.

Especially as it seems to be the dumping ground for New Zealand teachers caught using school computers for very dubious juvenile photographs.

272776 2004-09-16 00:33:00 Nah - Stuff living there... I just want their bandwidth :D Chilling_Silence (9)

Reminds me of a news item I heard recently, tho not about Korea:

8 out of 10 hackers are from Brazil, and 2/3's of all paedophile internet porn originates in Brazil. Seems hard to believe but evidently the laws in Brazil are very slack or nonexistent.

Why not? When (not if??) the North invades there will be very pretty light shows to watch!!. Maybe the real reason the North would invade is toget this great broadband?? :D

272779 2004-09-16 01:06:00 I think the real message that can be gleaned from the article is that either the South Korea government is very enlightened to the benefits of fast broadband for the masses/business/economy or that competition amongst the telecos there are fueling the drive for delivering fast broadband to a hungry populace. New Zealand has neither: the government here appears reluctant to push for fast broadband and competition in the broadband market is small to almost non-existent, our small population base not withstanding. xmojo1 (4630)

Its also where the majority of "Snuff" movies were/are made .

Its a massive country with uncontrollable population explosion . That keeps on going bankrupt and cutting down the rain forest for Macdonalds . The laws are there but .

If the state keeps going bankrupt, how do you afford to police people, in non violent, international offending?

272781 2004-09-16 05:42:00 As far as Broadband Internet is concerned, I think we are one of the most expensive countries in the developed world including some of the 'not so' developed places in Asia such as China, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Hongkong, and Singapore.

No competition is probably the main reason.
