272820 2004-09-16 05:05:00 Hi
I am using a Dell laptop to pick up emails using the Wellington CafeNet facility. I can connect to the internet without problems, and can download emails - but not send them. Trying to send an email results in the following OE6 message:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop3.paradise.net.nz', Server: 'smtp.paradise.net.nz', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E
I assume I need to change a setting somewhere in OE6, but am unable to work out what this is. Can anybody offer any advice? (I am using Win XP Home)
Thanks

272821 2004-09-16 05:27:00 Do you use it anywhere else and it works with sending emails?

If so, its a prob between the cafe and the laptop.

The server for your isp may have been down, when u tried to send an email.

272822 2004-09-16 06:36:00 Many ISP's deny "relaying" where you try to send mail through one ISP while connected via another.

Sounds like thats what is happening. You are connecting to an ISP that CafeNet use, and its not you ISP. OK for receiving email but sending is denied.

You need to set the SMTP server to whatever is required for CafeNet ISP, whover that is?

272823 2004-09-16 08:19:00 i use paradise as my email address since it is work related however i have a wireless internet connection with wave so my OE is setup like this:

Incoming Mail:
pop3.paradise.net.nz

Outgoing Mail:
smtp.wave.co.nz

You need to change the outgoing mail server to that of the current isp you are connected on otherwise it will not work.

272824 2004-09-16 08:54:00 CafeNet don't allow outbound connections on port 25 - part of their strategy to prevent the network being used for spam. whiskeytangofoxtrot (438)

Incidentally CafeNet is operated by CityLink (the fibre people) - however as mentioned they don't allow SMTP traffic from the CafeNet service.

272826 2004-09-18 01:00:00 Thanks for the advice. Have checked with CafeNet - it seems to only way to work around this is to temporarily change the server for outgoing emails to smtp.cafenet.co.nz in OE6. tkelly (709)
