273147 2004-09-17 08:33:00 Can I get a ADSL plan for mobile jetstream or does it have to be one of their shocking high priced mobile jetstream plans?? I wanna get rid of my phone line but i know wireless internet isnt available in Rotorua till Feb/Mar 2005 (woosh) and only option currently is Mobile Jetstream on 027....but their plans are soooo high...$25 monthly for 12mb...or $45 for 25mb..i dont mind it if it was only for downloading emails which i can save MBs by checking on wap browser then deleting spam and unnesserary emails on it (its free to check and delete but costs to read hence why download via mobile jetstream) and that should take less than 25mb a month i hope...

But was wondering if a ADSL plan can be done...a bigger MB cap...

273148 2004-09-17 08:35:00 I also forgot to ask..does anyone know how many MBs a 1hr convosation on MSN uses? with NO file transfers and the emoticon pictures disabled so i'd only see the symbols not the actual faces... c_sinclair (5998)

Bugger all, though depends on whether it's a flat out conversation or a message every few minutes.

Start pasting text into a text file and see how much it takes to get to a MB - a hell of a lot.

Doesn't make a difference - the emoticons are transmitted as text not images and interpreted client side. (unless they are custom ones)

Nope, thats why it's called Mobile Jetstream. It's not designed as a permanent net connection, just like Vodafone's (superior) GPRS service.

They are only designed for extremely basic and light use.

2005 isn't that far away.

273151 2004-09-17 09:29:00 I've got one of those Jetstream aircard.

They are strictly speaking, not ADSL. They just branded it as Jetstream to convey the image of a broadband product.

Jetstream mobile is based on CDMA. The current speed is around 115k although I've been advised this will increase to 2mbits in the future.

Flexibility wise, it is great when you are at the airport or hotel room. Sure beats using the telephone line or crappy 56k cellphone link to the office. Connection is very quick too. But seriously, the latency is crap and 115k is still slower than my home ADSL line.

You are charged for traffic, not online time, so it can be called a permanent net connection. I used to leave my connection on the whole time at the hotel and let outlook poll the email server.

And yeah, I wouldn't use it unless it's paid for by the company.
