273028 2004-09-16 23:45:00 Hi and Welcome to PressF1 :)

That message looks like to be associated with a video driver or utility incompatibility. Microsoft has instructions on how to overcome this - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 217752 (support.microsoft.com).

Please post back with how you get on or if you require more help following those instructions. :)

273029 2004-09-16 23:46:00 as I recall from when I upgraded I had to format the hard drive and then do a clean install. I am sure someone here will gie you good advice.
Good Luck.

If you have backed up copied/all your data, and you have installable copies of all Your drivers and programs, a clean install would be better.

But:

1 you must have available a full Win 95 disk, or a full set of floppy (in usable order) for Win 3/3.11, or a full Win 98 disk.

2 You should probably get something like the "driver guide" back up tool to copy all your installed drivers, and ensure you have "Installable" versions of all these drivers before formatting you boot partition.

3 Wait a little while for other voices to speak, then formulate your course of action, of course at your own risk.

273031 2004-09-17 05:46:00 A clean install is always best as there may be a lot of crud carrying over from an upgrade.

It is possible to do a full clean install on a freshly formatted HDD from a win98se upgrade CD (not a win98 to win98se upgrade CD), by creating a dummy NTLDR file with no extension and putting it in the C:\ root directory. The dummy file needs something in it like the word rem to make it non zero length.

This 'fools' the upgrade CD into thinking there is already an OS installed.

If you are upgrading from Win95A, then your HDD will be FAT 16. It would be best to download a Win98SE boot disk with CDROM support, then FDISK and say yes to large drive to give you FAT32, then format.

Then if you can get hold of the Microsoft Security Update CD, that will do a lot of the Win98SE upgrading, like adding IE 6.
