2004-09-18 02:38:00 | I have a 600MB Swap partition, but only because I use the Hibernation. If I didnt, then I'd limit mine to 100MB. Realistically, it depends on how much RAM you have. I recommend (Just personal advice) that you do at least a 200MB Swap partition, regardless of how much RAM you have, unless you've got 512 or more... then 100 will do in most instances. My laptop has only once or twice used a few megs of the SWAP partition (30 out of 100) so there's no point having double my RAM amount (1gb) in SWAP is there. Ive never had any issues with it wanting a /home partition, I just choose Cancel. On a HDD of that size I'd really recommend against partitioning it further than a SWAP and / partition. Are you _positive_ you chose Cancel for a /home partition? Chill.

2004-09-18 03:27:00 | Ok well im posting this from Yoper so ive done something right :) Have to say im very impressed, the installation seems to have gone much smoother than i expected. Its detected my soundblaster and nForce2 chipset and everything is ticking along nicely. Video is another story though, Yoper seems to have crap support for ATI and i dont have any 3D support. Not really a big problem as i dont intend to play games under linux. First problem is that it hasnt detected the scroll wheel on my MS Explorer 3.0 which is a bit of a problem as it use my scroll wheel all the time. Chill can you give me a rough idea where i should be looking to encourage Yoper to detect my scroll wheel? One other problem is that its set my screen res at 1600x1200 (which my monitor can only do at 70Hz) and when i try to resize it back down to 1280x1024 it get all the proportions wrong. I dont want to reset things on the monitor physically as its set up nicely for windows.

2004-09-18 03:57:00 | Setup monitor settings in YoperConf with Sax2 Do the Mouse config in Sax2 also :-) ATi are known to have bad support, but see here: www.yoper.com So, what are your first thoughts/impressions of Yoper? Chill.

2004-09-18 05:51:00 | Good stuff Pete. As chill says, Sax for monitor, mouse, etc, etc. I've found Sax a bit wobbly, especially when setting resolutions, keep trying it if it doesn't stick. Chill, out of several different configurations I chose during setup up, the no to a home partition was chosen at least 3 times before it stuck. reading the forums, I get the distinct impression this has happened to other people as well, along with the Sax issue I mentioned above along with others Sax issues I've encountered. In fact my whole installation is flakey from boot/Lilo, to login (sometimes have to login as root > startx, etc, etc,) to intermittent freezes and other weird things happening. Probably just me and my inexperience but some of these things are inexplicable (and repeated in the forum). I don't know how to heal Linux as I can most times with windows, I'll reinstall once again but my patience is running out, which is a shame because when on the go it's a great distro. Please accept my apologies for having a grumble in your thread Pete. I did notice quite a bit of info in the Yoper forum re ATI so have a rummage around. Cheers Murray P

So far so good, I like it better than Mandrake 10, it will actually work on my PC, as Fedora Core 2 wouldnt boot. It uses the latest kernel so it automatically installs drivers for my nForce2 chipset which makes my life alot easier and its far less time consuming to install unlike Gentoo. One strange thing that ive noticed is that when trying to access forums such as PressF1 it takes ages for the pages to load. If im just surfing normal websites such as HardOCP or Extremetech its nice and quick. But the moment i start surfing at PressF1 or OCNZ it takes forever to load. Ive tryed both Firefox and Konquerer and the problems still there It would be nice if the guys at Yoper did a lil work on their logos etc For such a quality OS some of the graphics they use are really crappy. Anyone notice the MacOS logos on the harddrives in the Yoperconfig? A nice high res well designed logo wouldnt go a miss either. Other than that its a very very nice OS, its relatively easy to install once you get past the partioning problems and looks as good as any other distribution ive tryed. |

2004-09-20 02:28:00 | Go into Synaptic and hit Reload. Flick through some of the packages - There's wallpapers in there, some real nice ones!
