274154 2004-09-20 11:25:00 using netscape 7.1 on o/s win 98se
upgraded winamp to 505 - the downloaded file came in as "winamp505-full.exe.ram - but when i clicked to open, this message;
"the file "winamp505-full.exe.ram" is of a type application/octet-stream, and netscape does not know how to handle this type of file - what should netscape do with this file?"
this is not the usual setup file i'm familiar with - don't they just unbundle to a selected folder when clicked?
appears a .ram file is a "realplayer" file - haven't got realplayer (believe it's full of junk/adware)
any suggestions please?

274155 2004-09-20 11:30:00 remove .ram from the file name,then run it

274156 2004-09-20 12:01:00 There is a real alternative from here (www.free-codecs.com)

274157 2004-09-21 08:12:00 thanks metla for replying - yes, downloaded from "nullsoft" so guess it's genuine & can't delete the "ram" 'cause the file is an "exe" just shows up ram in properties
and "johnboy" - thanks too but that programme same in as a zip file but winzip didn't recognise it as it had an extension "php" ??? - am i confused?
perhaps i should stick with the version 2.8 which seems to perform okay

274158 2004-09-21 08:16:00 As an aside here you should never ever (read: do not ever) trust a file with double extensions.

Thats the standard way viruses are sent in many cases.

I just went and downloaded that same file out of interest from here (www.winamp.com), and it does not have a .ram double extension at all, but just the standard winamp505_full.exe file name.

If your netscape browser is somehow tagging on additional and incorrect extensions (php is a HTML web scripting language), I would try downloading the Winamp with a different browser and see what happens with that.

274160 2004-09-21 22:42:00 thanks for that Jen, worked fine from that site - don't know what was going on with the other -- and godfather, your comments i value so thank you - will be more vigilant in future jayal (1291)
