274098 2004-09-20 08:32:00 I'm thinking of setting up a new PC and would like to know of the best (motherboard) buy on the market. Or if there is one in the 'making' that is worth waiting for, ie. a week or two. Brianxxx (6131)
274099 2004-09-20 08:42:00 You need to know what cpu you are puting in the motherboard first. Intel or AMD. BootyLicious (526)
274100 2004-09-20 08:44:00 It would help is you specified AMD or Intel? Socket A, 370, 478, 940, 939, 754, or 775? SD, DDR or DDR2 memory? PCIe or AGP? Pete O'Neil (250)

274102 2004-09-20 10:01:00 Ok, general use. I like the AMD CPU but am open to others. I'm looking for the middle 2 upper middle$s of the road. U know speed and performance at an affordable price eg. value for money not something that will be out of date/use in 2yrs. I'm asking for information on any major innovations that have just come out or are about to come out. If U were to setup a PC were would U start? I thought that the Mobo would be first but no u say the CPU. I wonder Y? Brianxxx (6131)
274103 2004-09-20 10:35:00 Can you give us a clearer idear of budget ?,then we can at least tell you which board is best for that price range.

No board is garenteed to be suported for 2 years, but i would be looking at one of the 939-pin boards for the AMD 64 bit cpu's.

Because different cpu's require different motherboards. So what I'd do is look for the cpu you'd be happy with in terms of performance and price, then select the mobo that will accept the cpu type.

A good place to find "mid" range prices is www.pricespy.co.nz - just look at the middle priced items, report back what you decide on, then we can advise what mobo will be compatible. I'd guess that a 3ghz cpu would be around the sweet-spot at the moment, then select a mobo that can be upgradeable to around 4ghz+

Check out this thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) and if that isn't enough have a look at this one (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) as well. ;-) :-)

274106 2004-09-20 21:55:00 aaahhhhh.......Brought a tear to my eye,we just don't have enough of those knock em down drag em out Intel Vs AMD threads anymore.

I guess thats because AMD have spanked Intel so severly that any argument is redundent.
