274048 2004-09-20 06:30:00 I have had this trouble before but I got no help with it. When I insert some CDs the CD ROM will not read them. Today it wouldn’t read Battlefield 1942. Sometimes if I put in a CD that will always read (Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour) and then take that out and put in the one it wont read it would then read. I got Battlefield working by doing that. Battlefield will always read now! Also today I brought ‘The Sims 2’, and it wont read it, I tried all my 'tricks' and none worked. I am running Win98SE; the CD ROM drive is 'LITEON CD-ROM'
Thanks to all who help!
Mike

274049 2004-09-20 06:59:00 I'd be suspicious it's a hardware problem with the CD drive . A replacement will only set you back about $30 these days . Have you tried cleaning the CD drive laser with one of those cleaner CD's? KatiMike (242)
274050 2004-09-20 07:11:00 Yes, It wouldnt read it :'( Tribomb (5547)
274051 2004-09-20 07:12:00 You mean a CD with a little brush type thing on it dont you? Tribomb (5547)
274052 2004-09-20 07:55:00 Yep , apparently they clean off all the dust , smoke etc . If the CD unit couldn't read such a disk I'd be even more sure it's on it's way out. I presume the disks play fine on other CD-ROMs ie it's not a problem with the disks themselves KatiMike (242)
274053 2004-09-20 08:01:00 try getting the latest drivers for it Patrick 2003 (277)
274054 2004-09-20 08:02:00 Had this problem with a Win 95 installation with a CD ROM drive under guarantee, it got replaced eventually. Amongst your tricks, taking anti static precautions have you checked that the cable from the Drive to the motherboard does not have a loose connection, ditto for monitor connection. FrankS (257)
274055 2004-09-20 08:07:00 I dont know, I will cheek the cables. Tribomb (5547)
274056 2004-09-20 08:14:00 You cant get Drivers for a CD-Rom AFAIK!

I would suggest that its the Copy Protection conflicting with your Drive (on its way out I'd assume).

Does anybody you know have a CD-RW, or a DVD-Rom drive you can borrow, as these generally accept media better than just a stock CD-Rom Drive would.
