274536 2004-09-22 01:31:00 I have a customer who has some HP computers that want to upgrade from the 17" CRT HP monitors to 17" LCD screens.
I gave them a quote for AOC LCD's and they also got a quote from HP.
The quote from HP is about $200 more for each screen so they wanted to buy from them from me. Then they found out from HP that if they use any other monitor that is not an HP it will void the warranty on the PC!!??
Is that true and can they do that??
I don't see how a monitor could affect a PC in any way so how can they say that?? Are they just trying to get the sale or can they legally void a warranty on a PC if you don't use the same brand of monitor??

274537 2004-09-22 01:39:00 SOUNDS a bit like protectionism to me....... drcspy (146)
274538 2004-09-22 01:47:00 I would ask for HP to provide that in writing, and get the name of whoever you were talking to. metla (154)
274539 2004-09-22 01:53:00 I'm waiting for a call back from one of my suppliers who deals with HP.
It all sounds a bit crazy to me. What about a printer, does that have to an HP as well!! :D

274540 2004-09-22 01:55:00 I seriously doubt that they could defend that position CYaBro, if indeed it is true. Monitor type has no bearing on the warranty repair implications for the computer. There could of course be some other business tie-up that links the computer & monitor but quite frankly, I can't see it.

I'd recommend to the customer that they go with the cheaper price and not worry what HP says. Perhaps they could keep one of their old HP monitors and trot that out for use anytime a warranty matter needs attention.:D

274541 2004-09-22 02:00:00 I would say that under NZ law HP are on shakey ground. If there is an extended warranty involved then HP can write the terms but cannot contract out of NZ law as far as expected life an performance of the product. I would hazard a guess that the only part the warranty that would be negated would apply to the original HP monitor which is no longer attached anyway. I tend to agree, a monotor is a peripheral is it not.

Check it out with the relevant authorities/people.

274543 2004-09-22 02:17:00 HP are terrible like that.

They want to void printer waranty if you use refills or 3rd party ink.
(mainly so you can pay them $90 for a new cartridge instead of $30 to someone else for a refill)

The waranty card for my Canon states that "We do not reccommend using 3rd party ink" (but they do not say that using it will void the waranty)

I have always used refills for it anyway, and have never had any problems.

They can legally do that though agent, because they don't have to support equipment damaged by non OE substances. Some refills may be OK, but they are not all to a uniform standard so an element of risk is always present if you elect to use them.

Run a new car on doped fuel or use nitrous for that extra zip and the manufacturer won't come to the party if you have mechanical failure or premature wear. They'll spot the evidence no trouble and give your engine back to you in a box.

274545 2004-09-22 03:27:00 I killed my old Epson inkjet that way years ago. I've stuck to brand inks ever since.

But a warranty that prevents you using a different monitor just sounds plain odd. Like a printer, or a keyboard, mouse, or speakers, its a peripheral and should have no effect on the PC. As mentioned above, I'd want to see that in writing. Did it come direct from HP or was that what some reseller/salesman claimed?
