274488 2004-09-23 00:55:00 Yahoo is OK but I wouldn't join a channel if u plan on doing this lol. If you've never heard of BOTS, you will with Yahoo. It can be a bit laggy too. BUT might be OK with broadband.

Not too sure BUT you might have to add ports too if video or sound doesnt work with yahoo either. Not too sure with ZA. I dont use it.

BUT I spose it depends also if you DO use a router. If you do, and if it needs to have a port added, you have no choice BUT to add it to the router. Or else it could block it.

274489 2004-09-23 02:22:00 Spacemannz - Is the router the broadband modem that sits on my desk? And if so how do I add a port to it? KB kbcad (1025)
274490 2004-09-23 02:27:00 Umm dunno kb. Some adsl modems have a modem/router built in. Some dont, theyre separate. It depends on what brand/model your modem is. On whether it has both modem and router in it.

I wouldnt have a clue how to add a port to a router. I dont use one right now. I'm only on dialup so have no need for a router. What brand/model is your adsl modem??

274492 2004-09-23 04:29:00 Ummm, just chatted to a guy who says that model (Is it just Speedtouch not the Speedtouch Pro?) that u MAY have to add ports to it in order for certain things to work. Spacemannz (808)
274493 2004-09-23 06:38:00 How? kbcad (1025)
274494 2004-09-23 07:06:00 Did it come with a manual?? If not I suggest u goto the alcatel site and d/l one. Spacemannz (808)
274495 2004-09-23 23:14:00 Hopefully. I will be trying MSN Messenger again this weekend after just updating to the latest version , so will come back with any information gleaned.

NAT certainly causes problems as compared to dial-up. You need the router manual to tell you how to get into it to change things, there will be a password also, maybe a default one.

Telecom people should have told you how to go about things and given you a manual, after all that's what you pay for, or am I being naive to expect them to do that??

The router may or may not have a hardware firewall built in and switched on. If so then there are 3 layers of barrier to MSN, hardware firewall, NAT, and Zone Alarm.

I have a Dynalink, and the hardware firewall has to be turned off for streaming audio and most things. I gave up on it as a dead loss.

I suggest you do a lot of Googling, like typing 'msn messenger audio video ports' or similar into Google. There is lots of info out there.

But you will have to read up on how to set ports on your firewall, and maybe make a 'virtual server' setting in your router to forward the port or ports used by MSN.

274496 2004-09-24 02:23:00 Tanks, guys for your help and advice. Did a google and found software "RealTunnel" by Paradial, that appears to be aimed at sinilar problems. Anyone with any knowledge about this or the company? (I'm getting paranoid! If something gets messed up, I'm not too clever at fixing) KB kbcad (1025)
274497 2004-09-24 03:21:00 I dont think going to something like that is going to help, it is just another layer of complexity. Best to stick to just MSN, or Yahoo, dont forget people at the other end have to have the same software setup, you cant do this unilaterally.

Yahoo Messenger worked for me using a router with NAT, MSN didnt, or at least the audio/video/file transfer didnt, the chat function is ok.

Google will show you that MSN gives untold problems with routers and firewalls, that's what gets up my nose about Microsoft, dont they ever check their software under typical usage conditions???

I really expect a software package to work out of the box as it is supposed to, not to have to become a computer guru :)

If my tests over the weekend work out ok, I'll post the results, it wont be before monday as it's still sunday in Canada.
