274334 2004-09-21 08:12:00 What version of Linux are you going to be running on the 166? godfather (25)
274335 2004-09-21 08:18:00 oh linux? i have win95 (should have said it) on it, but i want to get into linux what do you recommend godfather? Patrick 2003 (277)
274336 2004-09-21 08:36:00 I don't recommend anything, but asking for advice without giving the basic details is ... unhelpful to those trying to assist.

Hence the Linux question to promote an answer.

However I suspect Linux is probably your best option on a boat anchor of that age. I am sure the Linux gurus will happen along.

274339 2004-09-21 08:49:00 Why do u want to shutdown the 166MHz? If it isnt passive it wouldnt be that hard to make it passive, thus eliminating any noise. Just stash it under your bed or something and leave it on 24/7. You could stick a couple harddrive in there aswell and have a fileserver aswell. Just put smoothwall on there and hey presto a glorified router. Pete O'Neil (250)

yea i have but i want it out of my room and in the other one, my idea was just set the 166 up,shove sum sort of linux on it and leave it on 24/7 and let it go on the net when its turned on, but oh welll maybe that idea is just a no go, ill have to see and experiment

274342 2004-09-21 10:07:00 It might help if you mentioned what sort of internet connection you were planning on using? Theres software out there tha allows you to remotely connect and disconnect a dail up connection if thats what your after? I used one on Windows once before i got DSL. Pete O'Neil (250)
