2014-03-20 12:20:00 | I've held off asking and apologise for yet another "laptop" thread. My question is - how does a person choose a new laptop from among the bewildering array of choices available? Heck even the same model number with a single variation jumps from $800 to $1600. Lets assume the buyer (probably me very soon :D) wants bog standard internet, good sound for clips. probably DVD, and reliability. Quality. I'm typing this on an 9yr HP 6710B with XP running well. Not a pad, not a smart phone, not a net book, a proper laptop. Cheers Winston

Cheers Winston If you give yourself a specific budget of say $1200 and just look at the 6 laptops that sit in that group and then throw a dart and buy which ever one the dart lands on, because to be honest, you could spend all day reading up on which one has this best spec or that best spec and still be none the wiser as to which one you want because they are all going to be pretty similar . |

2014-03-20 23:07:00 | The way I bought my current one was to decide on: *my budget, *maker (ASUS cos of my good experience with my Nexus 7 and many recommendations on here for the brand) and *what I want it for. It was easy after that and I got what I want. It has replaced my failing desktop, and with the addition of a Toshiba Dynadock I can still use a sensible keyboard and mouse and my relatively new wide screen monitor. So my recommendation Winston, for what it is worth, is to work out your answers to the three questions I have quoted, and you should find it easy after that! :-)

2014-03-21 06:56:00 | I came across the Asus F502CA-XX081H in Hardly Normal yesterday for $556 which seemed incredibly cheap. Automatically wondered what was wrong with it. The only two reservations I have are that it's a physically large machine - light enough but room to rest your wrists beyond the keypad. The other thing is no DVD. In all honesty I've probably watched recent movies from a USB stick but its nice to have a choice. Any comments on this deal? The reviews appear to be positive. www.harveynorman.co.nz

2014-03-21 20:23:00 | My suggestion is minimum 15.6" size with a numeric keypad. Don't go without the dvd/blu-ray drive - you may miss it a lot later. You should easy get one for about a grand. I could sell you my Asus one for a third of that price, with Win 7 installed. | Greg (193) | |
