1370637 2014-03-19 04:26:00 Old printers don't work with them. It's not WiFi or Bluetooth - then again getting apps for a printer for a phone could be sketchy. So does the Apple Air / Google Cloud ready printers need the Internet to print?

Our old printer doesn't work with x64 and should my 7yr old laptop break down I don't plan on replacing it. Rather not get into VM or dual boot just to print - plus I would need to carry our laser MFC to my bedroom to print a single page .....

Or is there another way you suggest?

1370638 2014-03-19 04:43:00 Do you mean Airprint?? If you do then no it doesnt need net access. The printer here supports Airprint. But I dont have any devices that use it. What printer do you have / use?

The canon app for canon printers works fine. It lets you scan from a smartphone.

1370639 2014-03-19 05:26:00 It's just a USB MFC - Canon MF5630. So there is no way a phone can connect to it right? I heard that if you connect the printer to a computer running Google Chrome then it does but then again I cannot move the MFC to my little bedroom. Also the MF5630 doesn't work on x64 so I would have to dual boot or run VM which I rather not do.

Yes - AirPrint. Does AirPrint / Cloud Print compatible printers work with all Apple / Android devices? Or do you still need to rely on an app for it?

Edit - Google says Cloud Print printers accesses the internet ....

1370640 2014-03-19 06:25:00 Yup I dont think there is any way to install drivers / or print to it. Unless you use XP/2000. I have no idea what you need for cloud printers, never had one.

But I do know printers that have airprint dont need net access. Because this printer doesnt have net access. But, it's wireless and supports airprint. And I can print / scan wirelessly to / from it. And there is a canon android app you can use for it. I think you can also use the airprint if you've got something like an Ipad. Or whatever Apple devices have / support Airprint

Only thing (with some printers) if it does support Airprint, you MAY have to update the firmware on it first

1370641 2014-03-19 06:28:00 You can print to shared printers on a network easily enough, I used to have an app loaded that had a huge list of supported printers and tested it out with an ancient HP laser at work and it printed just fine. Sorry I can't remember the name of it and there are hundreds on the app store but with a bit of trial and error you can definitely do it.

Why bother though? if you are near enough to a PC to use it's shared printer just copy the file across and print it from the PC.

1370642 2014-03-19 06:51:00 Update; it was printbot

You just share the printer on whatever machine it does work on and then as long as you are connected to the same network you can print. You do need wi-fi on your phone and router, but not the printer.

1370643 2014-03-19 06:54:00 Speedy - this AirPrint feature does it work pretty much any Android / Apples or is it selective?

Dugimodo - shared meaning thru Windows? All (?) printes can do that thru Google Chrome and relayed thru the Interent or with another app and without the Internet I read before . The PC acts as the print server .

Yeah . . if the printer is in my room it is easy but preferred not .

I would of thought after so many yrs the phones/tablets there would have been some solid solutions . Hmmm ideally the printer is in the lounge by itself without being attached to a computer .

1370644 2014-03-19 07:23:00 I think the canon android app I used, connects wirelessly then it'll let you scan/print. I dont think it uses Airprint. Have no idea about the apple side, never had any apple device that supports Airprint. Probably never will

Most things these days if it doesnt have wireless forget it. Buy a printer that's got wireless / airprint. They're pretty cheap

1370645 2014-03-19 08:05:00 Thanks all - :)

The Brother wireless printers are a shade under $200, look for a special in the future when the laptop breaks and if the printing solutions get any better then .

Apple devices seems to need a AirPrint feature printer to work or teethered to a computer (AirPrint and Cloud Print) .
The one Speedy is using I think is just normal "wireless" . Not AirPrint . The Brother one I just had a look at isn't (Apple) AirPrint nor (Google) Cloud Print but it is normal wireless which Brother provides an Android app and a Apple app . It seems that if the printer supports these 2 it would be more reliable b/c if not it's just relying on the printer manufacturer to provide future apps under a newer OS .

1370646 2014-03-19 08:14:00 Its wireless and supports Airprint. It's also a fax. The MX436. It has also got an install file to update the firmware (to make it support Airprint (if it doesnt support it already).

At the mo, I use it to print from 3 Pc's wirelessly. I wouldnt bother getting brother myself. Uses too many cartridges and they're not cheap

Some of the printers you get now have a cashback offer on them. When I brought this one I think I got $30 back. After I filled in a form on the Canon site
