1352303 2013-08-28 04:15:00 Anybody out there got a Sony Vaio T Series SVT14127CGS?

What do you think of it? Any problems? Seems to be quite a well-specced machine other than having only 4GB of RAM

1352304 2013-08-28 12:06:00 It doesn't look too bad on paper - I don't have one, and have avoided Vaio machines in the past because they don't seem to be built as robustly as a typical Asus or Toshiba.

In my mind I see them as an "Apple-wannabes" in the Windows space - pretty, expensive (generally-speaking) and flimsy-feeling. But I guess it depends on your intended purpose for it.

Vaio machines also seem to have a lot of bloatware pre-installed (at least they have in the past - haven't looked at one recently) - more so even than a Toshiba!

1352305 2013-08-28 13:43:00 Cruddy low res screen 1366 x 768, you want at least 1440x900 or 1600x900 on a 14" IMO. Alex B (15479)
1352306 2013-08-28 23:55:00 I wouldn't want to pay its ~$1700 retail price, that's for sure. Low-res screen, light on RAM, no SSD (but at least it's a hybrid), and few USB ports. You can get a comparably-specced device for about $400 less if you look at other brands - in fact, if you drop the CPU form i7 to i5, you'll probably pick up an SSD and a higher res display while still saving a few hundred bucks.

That said, for the right price, they'd be nice. We have a number of Vaio's here, though not that specific model, and they go OK, but wouldn't be my first choice unless they were more competitively priced.

1352307 2013-08-29 00:49:00 Thanks guys. Back to the drawing board. I might have a look at the Asus range now. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a machine for about $1500 which does everything well? Richard (739)
1352308 2013-08-29 01:00:00 Define everything? The 13" MacBook Air can be had for NZ$ 1,589.00 and is a pretty nice machine for the money. Only thing is if you want windows you will need a Windows license for it. Alex B (15479)
1352309 2013-08-29 01:06:00 Alex, the portable needs to be able to talk to our Widows desktop, and access the files on it. Printing to the attached printer would be another issue with a Mac. I don't really like the idea of mixing two operating systems. Richard (739)
1352310 2013-08-29 01:10:00 As I said, you can install windows on the Macbook if you so choose.

The T430's are a nice machine, pretty utilitarian looking, but who cares. With the WiFi card upgrade and screen upgrade comes to NZ$1,568.47, your choice of Win7 or 8 also.

I use a client-supplied Lenovo T430 for work - I wouldn't recommend them to anyone who was spending their own money...

1352312 2013-08-29 01:59:00 How about this beastie: pricespy.co.nz

I have its older brother the N50Vc - had it for 4 years now and it's still going strong
