1370699 2014-03-24 08:20:00 GREAT. Questions:
Wired, wifi or mixed?
Sec, Int, or primary?
Did you get the update pack from the MOE or clean installs from downloaded isos?
With Smartnet and local files - is local server version important?

Makes me feel a bit more optimistic - if I could only get this damn laptop to work.

Have on wired and WiFi. Int, Primary and business with both AD and SmartNet.
Haven't seen an update pack for years. Have downloaded from Volume Licencing. Some laptops have been purchased with non Pro versions of Windows so normally format and clean install.
Smartnet version doesn't matter. The ones I have involvement in are 5+ years old. With a Smartnet server rename the PC workgroup to Win7Group or whatever you want (called win7group as I do this with Win 7 machines as well). Do not use Homegroup. Turn off user control, install Smartlogin and configure for your server.
Login to Smart Logon with a network account and all network drives should connect. Local files are just that, local and have nothing to do with SmartNet or AD. Just depends if you want them shared or redirected to the server but that requires more configuration.
If trying to connect to another PC make sure something is shared on the machine connecting to and you have permission to access.

1370700 2014-03-25 20:57:00 Solved it. Stupid Toshiba A100 laptops have a little switch on the case to turn on WiFi. Finally an error message mentioned this! Turn on and connected ok.
Now to work on the wired connection.

1370701 2014-04-01 08:57:00 According to this guy you don't need the Enterprise version, to create a To Go disk (www.neowin.net)

Just a program called GImagex, a flash drive, A Win 8 disk or ISO. Mount it. Copy the install.wim file to a folder or desktop, and type in a few commands after.

you're not licensed to do this, Enterprise Edition is required for Windows To Go FYI

1370702 2014-04-01 08:59:00 Add to that several hours to get it working ;)

Tried it, took 93 minutes just to create a the USB drive, did the command prompts, went through fine, when trying to boot from it :sleep:sleep over an hour later still sitting on the windows icon with the circle going round and round and round :waughh:

BUT I found the problem, what the article doesn't say is that not all USB drives are compatible for running Windows to go 8.1.

I tried it on the exact same USB drive using the real feature in 8.1 and it showed the error USB drive not compatible with Windows to go. In the past I had used the exact same drive on a windows 8 and it worked fine.

you get what you pay for

think of all the IO read writes that Windows needs to do, to boot an operate

if you put that on a elcheapo $5 USB key from The Warehouse obviously its not going to be high quality flash chips inside that key

1370703 2014-04-01 09:00:00 I also thought it was a cool idea but after a bit of reading it needed one of the approved drives which are fairly pricey except for the WD drive

If I had a selection of 16gb drives it would be worth while giving it a go to see if one worked

Would be an advantage for Comp tech's

it is a cool idea, but the drives "are approved" so they boot fast, and they don't wear the drive out

Support drives generally are SSD speeds, USB3 (but work fine in a USB2 port) and have wear levelling technology etc built in

a $10 key is not going to give you a good user experience, so that is why its blocked

1370704 2014-04-01 09:01:00 Finally got WTG going as per speedy link.

The problem WAS the USB drive, the fact that program doesn't check for being compatible is a huge FAIL.

I put a Laptop (2.5") 80GB drive into an external case, re-did it, this time it worked - install time on 1st USB drive- 93 Minutes - booting once commands run - failed, wouldn't work endless "setting up".

Install on external HDD - 12 minutes to install, ran commands, 5 minutes to setup and fully working. ( you need a product key during the setup, in my case I just used the default w8.1 - non activate Product keys)

The Microsoft WTG creator tool (control panel) does check the RW speeds of your USB Key before it creates the image

1370705 2014-04-01 09:23:00 I dont use it. I was pointing out that you dont need enterprise to create one. Dont need it anyway Speedy Gonzales (78)
